Given Charlie Sheen's recent revelation about his HIV status, how likely is it that the diagnosis caused his "tiger blood" meltdown in 2011?

Not at all. That was caused by his drug use.
^What she said. He spent day upon day upon month drinking and drugging.
Most likely his drinking and drug use is his problem regarding his mental instability, but I did work with people who had AIDS and sometimes some of the diseases they developed, or meds they took, affected their mental capacity. As far as I know Sheen is just positive for HIV and not sick from it.
I saw him on The Today Show the other day (interview with Matt Lauer) and he looked pretty good, actually. He looked like he gained a little weight in his face. Not puffy, just healthy looking, compared to the 2011 crack smoking days.
I’d say extremely likely
From his open letter
Roughly four years ago, I suddenly found myself in the throws of a seismic and debilitating three-day cluster-migraine-like headache. I was emergently hospitalized with what I believed to be a brain tumor or perhaps some unknown pathology. I was partially correct. Following a battery of endless tests, that included a hideous spinal tap, it was sadly and shockingly revealed to me that I was, in fact, positive for HIV.

The personal disbelief, karmic confusion, shame and anger lead to a temporary yet abysmal descent into profound substance abuse and fathomless drinking. It was a suicide run. Problem was, I’d forgotten that I’m too tough for such a cowardly departure. Yet, despite this loathsome and horrific odyssey, I was vigilant with my anti-viral program.

I don’t think it’s that uncommon for people who find out they have incurable, lethal diseases to have a similar reaction. If you aren’t anchored elsewhere, you have to find something worth continuing for, and sometimes just a way to turn your mind off for a while.
I believe he addressed this in the Matt Lauer interview. I recall his response was that he wished he could blame that outburst on his diagnosis, but his diagnosis came on the heels of all of that.
I guess I just don’t believe him. I feel bad for him, but he’s really going to have some trouble and I’d guess he’s going to be in the news for a long time.
Some points to consider:
– Charlie Sheen thinks he’s smarter than you or I. We’re mere mortals.
– the vague wording in his letter (“roughly four years ago”)
– if he slept with anyone after he knew, but before he started telling anyone, he’ll probably get sued because he’s a public figure with cash that people do not feel sorry for
– there’s probably at least one person out there he didn’t tell, or he wouldn’t be paying $10 million dollars to keep it quiet. That may be someone he cares about, but more likely it’s someone with leverage that would make paying extortion seem like that smarter option
– he hasn’t exactly watched what he says in public, so anything he said could be used as evidence
Unfortunately, because of how the media works, we’ll probably find out exactly when he found out. Even if it doesn’t come out in court, TMZ will pay someone with access to his medical records, or someone down on their luck who knows his story will give an interview.
Maybe I’m off base, but I’d guess we’ll know in less than a year.
How many women had sex with him after he knew? I’m guessing he didn’t suddenly become celebate. That would have blown his cover. Let’s see… who was he dating?
According to this ...
“Charlie Sheen said in a Tuesday interview on “Today” he divulged is HIV status to every one of his sex partners after finding out he was HIV positive four years ago.
But Bree Olson, who lived with Sheen in 2011, said in an interview with Howard Stern that Sheen never told her. “He never said anything to me,” she said. “I was his girlfriend. I lived with him. We were together. We had sex almost every day for a year.”
[She was 25 at the time]
Sheen’s other girlfriend at the time, Natalie Kenly, told TMZ she also did not know the actor had the virus. ” [She was also ~25 at the time.]
...
The notorious party boy — who has been known to mix and mingle with porn stars and prostitutes — insisted to Lauer he has told every single sexual partner of his condition since his diagnosis.”
I agree with @funkdaddy that it might likely have triggered Sheen’s rant and roll, but I’m not disputing @Cupcake, because I don’t know.
Seemed to me the whole “tiger blood” thing was an odd rant to have running into an HIV diagnosis.
According to his representative, Charlie tested negative twice following the tour.
I’m assuming that can be verified (or not) by his medical records. Hopefully this rep isn’t lying through his teeth. I wouldn’t trust Charlie as far as I could throw him because, let’s face it, he is an excellent actor so how would we know when he’s lying.
I always thought the whole rant tour and massive amount of drugging was a response to his being fired from Two and A Half Men. The whole “winning” shtick was basically bravado covering up his disappointment at the turn of events.
But, I think it’s kind of a moot point in light of all that’s happening and what will continue to unfold in court.
I’m having a bit of a hard time working up a whole lot of excess sympathy for the girlfriend. His reputation for being with more prostitutes than you can count was well known and documented so even if it wasn’t HIV, there are a ton of other sexually transmitted diseases (some of which can destroy a woman’s fertility even tho they can be cured) so why wouldn’t you protect yourself ? If people are in a monogamous relationship and later the woman finds out she was lied to, that’s one thing. But Charlie Sheen is apparently incapable of monogamy, judging by his track record. Why on earth was she expecting him to protect her instead of protecting herself ?
I mean if you’re with a snake and get bit, you can hardly blame the snake. It’s not as if you didn’t know.
I’m certainly not saying that he was right about any part of this. But the naïveté excuse only goes so far. She was 25, not 12.
Let’s face it, all the glitz, glamour, bling and easy money was a tremendous incentive to overlook basic sexual responsibility.
I’m very glad for her that she has tested negative. Hopefully this will be a wake up call to her that will last her for the rest of her life. If you lie down with dogs don’t be shocked when you end up with fleas.
