Have you ever owned purple shoes? eyeglasses with purple frames? How about a purple car--or a purple house?

Asked by Jeruba (56064points) November 23rd, 2015

And why is purple a little bit outrageous, at least in our western culture?

I simply do not believe that it’s because purple was once the color of royalty because purple dye was so rare and precious, and hence off limits to ordinary folks. I think it’s something about the color itself. But what?

I’ve never seen a purple cow
I never hope to see one
But I can tell you anyhow
I’d rather see than be one.

Gelett Burgess

However, we did paint the door to our office purple. It made it easier for folks to find us. We were the only purple door on the entire street; possibly the entire town.

I memorized that verse of Gelett Burgess when I was about 9 or 10—and I can still say it! Isn’t it great how the valuable things you learn in childhood can stay with you?

I’ve owned purple dresses, skirts and tops. Not shoes or eye glasses though. I also had a room painted totally in deep purple with white highlights in my teens. I wouldn’t do that again although I loved it then. Purple does seem to appeal to teens. I know a number of people who say purple was their favourite colour when they were teenagers. There is also a group of older ladies who wear purple hats. Not to mention the ‘purple rinse’ brigade. I can’t think why people like purple or why it’s a vaguely outrageous colour for some items. Is it because it has such warmth? Interesting question @Jeruba.

Reserved for royalty. I must settle for lavender.

I had a dark purple dress shirt once. It was a nice natural blend and held up well in the Florida heat. My wife got it for me. I liked it. The other nurses at work would always compliment me when I wore it. Sometimes they would say, “That’s a nice shirt. It looks good on you. Brings out your eyes. Did your wife get that for you?”

Purple just isn’t used as a house color in the US. I’m sure there must be some purple houses, but it isn’t commonly used. It is an interesting question. I’ve had an orange house, which I guess is unusual for most parts of the country. I see green, yellow, red, blue, in various different shades of those colors, but never purple. I did once drive by a church with purple trim. It’s so rare I guess it stuck with me.

I think the mid shades of purple are often associated with young girls, grape juice, lollipops, and black people in America. Lavender I think is also girls, and I think of Victorian settings also, but I don’t know if that’s accurate.

Some cultures purple is a mourning color.

Aubergine (eggplant) and plum are used in women’s apparel, and I like it very much myself.

As a teen I had a bedroom with white walls, white furniture, purple rug, crisp white duvet on the bed, and solid throw pillows in a hue slightly darker than pastel in pink, blue, and purple.

I have a purple helmet.

My wife had purple hair. She misses it, but her current job frowns on “unnatural” hair colors.

I love purple. I will buy purple clothes (which includes lavender) and jewelry. Not that I am wearing purple every day, but I like it. My mom gave me a gift once of a purple Coach handbag.

Like @Earthbound_Misfit, when I was a teen I have a bedroom with lavender walls and white trim.

I am going to re-do my daughter’s room and since she likes purple, too, I’m getting her lavender comforters for the beds.

If purple rain is forecast I wear a raspberry beret, but only when doves cry.

I haven’t owned anything purple since I was in college and that was the college color.

My first new (not a used beater that was held together with duct tape) car was a purple was a purple Honda Civic.

My wife still teases me about that car twenty years later.

Never been terribly fond of the color, myself.

I don’t care for purple. It seems unnatural, even though it appears twice in the rainbow as indigo and violet. I don’t like the color pink either.

That poem strongly resembles this one:

The Abominable Snowman
by Ogden Nash

I’ve never seen an abominable snowman,
I’m hoping not to see one,
I’m also hoping, if I do,
That it will be a wee one.

I like the color purple but can’t think of any specific items you have mentioned.

I did just order these spiffy little fun rain/mud boots on amazon this morning though. In “Raspberry”, gotta keep the horses on their toes with spooky boot colors. lol

Actually, had these boots come in orange I would have ordered them to match the duck and geese feet here. A parade of orange flappies. lol

I don’t mind the colour purple, but it’s not one of Spielberg’s best.

Purple hair and purple converse.

I’ve had purple glasses. I almost asked a question here about where Garcia on Criminal Minds gets her glasses but I finally found an obscure blog interview where she told. I can’t wait to go to LA to check it out. I’m sure there will be many shades of purple there!

I own purple shoes. They are high, but my sisters say they are not high heels. I am so not cut out to be a lady.

cheebdragon's avatar

Solid purple shoes? No, but I had a pair of these last year and I’ve had purple hair several times.

dxs's avatar

I have purple shoes and at least one purple shirt. Like @Cruiser, I also have a 70s purple swivel chair that I found in a lab of an abandoned science building.

Twice I’ve owned a pair of purple shoes, once with beautiful silver-toned buckles, once just plain low-heeled pumps that I loved. My everyday eyeglasses have deep purple metallic frames. If there’d been a purple car on the lot when I made up my mind what model to purchase, I’d have bought it.

Dressiest dress I ever had was purple, sequins and all. And I love my amethyst earrings.

No purple house, though, or furniture, or major wardrobe item such as a wool coat or suit. And it might be a little late for me to try on purple hair.

There’s plenty of purple to be found in nature—more purple blossoms than blue, isn’t that so?—so it’s not a rarity.

Maybe what’s faintly alarming about purple is its intensity. Or maybe it just has a reputation and associations—as do other colors—and our response to it is nothing other than cultural after all.

Purple was always difficult to make. Hard to get the right shade. I don’t know if all kids grow up making colors? I come from an artistic family (the gene basically skipped me) and part of growing up was learning how to make secondary colors from primary and so on.

Judi's avatar

I do have some purple sneakers.

Well, we have a couple of purple houses in town. They’re the homes of boosters for our college, whose colors are purple and white.

hearkat's avatar

I had a purple car; not a bright violet purple, but an eggplant/plum purple.

Purple is my favorite color, so I own many things that are purple; but for major articles, like eyeglasses and overcoats, I choose neutral colors so they don’t clash when I wear different colors.
