What can I do to help my hand recover from an injury that happened 4 years ago?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) December 15th, 2015

I punched a brick wall while wearing thick winter gloves and broke the left pinky and wrist four years ago. It hurts when I lift more than a large milk jug. I went to the doctor and he said if it gets painful I can get a x-ray, but other than that he can’t help me. Its called a boxers injury and is very common.

Go to the doctor, get an x-ray, and request physical therapy. PT will help relieve the pain.

The doctor already told you what to do.

@Hawaii_Jake Is right. At the very least you can try range of motion PT exercises. Bend the wrist all the way forward and gentle pressure hold for 15 seconds. Reverse and bend the wrist backwards and gentle pressure hold 15 seconds. Repeat. Also get a hand gripper strengthener that could help with your pinky and overall hand grip strength. I had a nasty spiral fracture of my finger and 10 years later is still gives me fits despite constant PT exercises.

@johnpowell The doctor didn’t tell me what to do. My hand doesn’t hurt, unless I carry something heavy, so I don’t get an x-ray.

It hurts if you carry stuff. So it hurts. I don’t think the doctor meant constant pain.

I agree with @Hawaii_Jake Get it x-rayed and request physical therapy which should make a big difference in your pain.

You are fortunate enough to live in a country with free medical care. Why on earth would you not get an X-Ray?

It will literally cost you NOTHING except a little bit of time so why would you think that people on the Internet would have better advice than what the Dr. already told you?

Go get it X-Rayed already and proceed from there.

[Health care in Canada is not free – it’s paid for through taxes.] By all means go – you already paid for it.

But it is free to every Canadian citizen regardless of whether they’ve ever paid one penny for taxes or not.

Ok I had the x-ray dr. Said that my hand is permanently damaged. A therapist told me to draw circles. I lost track of her and wonder if i should start doing the exercises again? Ok i will for a while and see what happens. Am changing it to signing my name over and over in pen and pencil.
