In your mind, what is the best n64 game?

Asked by Traveosa (60points) July 24th, 2008

I just recently got an n64 and i wanted to get some games for it. I am not sure which ones to get. I have Diddy Kong Racing, Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask, Mario Kart 64, Mario Tennis, Super Mario 64, and Super Smash Bros.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is my favorite game all time.

It’s all about the storyline and that game’s story line/general ambience and feel is incredible.

SUPER SMASH BROTHERS!

ftw1!!111!

star fox 64 was awesome! and goldeneye was cool too!

robmandu's avatar

Oh yeah… Goldeneye with the sniper rifle. From 300 yards away, you could simply knock the cap off a bad guy’s head. Ahhh-h-h-h… good times.

Mario 64.

But there was this obscure, bizarre game called “Mystical Ninja” featuring a medieval Japanese village, giant roller-skating robots smashing cities, a spastic fortune teller shouting “PLASMA,” sushi, and a fat sidekick. What a gem.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Golden Eye hands down. This was pretty much the first big FPS for consoles. It was a pretty solid game and great MP plus it was so much fun to just fuck around and do stupid stuff like robmandu said like shooting off peoples hats.

Lovelocke's avatar

Pardon those who named games you already purchased: Some gamers get too excited and read a post all the way through.

Some mentioned “Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon”... terrific game. Resident Evil 2 on the N64 is superior to it’s Playstation counterpart… And yes: It does have full video scenes, higher res graphics (If you have the 4mb expansion pack: Buy that!) and improved controls.

Shadowman was great. Perfect Dark was great. F-Zero X is cool. I liked how open ended Beetle Adventure Racing was. Harvest Moon 64 is pretty nice, as is Paper Mario and Pokemon Stadium 2.

Don’t be afraid to try out Mischief Makers… or Shadows of the Empire.

Super Metroid defensibly

Lovelocke's avatar

@ Scrump the dummy: ZERO metroid games were ever released on the N64. SUPER metroid was released on the Super Nintendo.

dragonflyfaith's avatar

The Mario Party games were great for N64.

Oh and I totally second Beetle Adventure Racing. I could play that one for hours, especially with a friend.

Scrumpulator's avatar

@lovelocke. Eh who cares. how long ago was that, like over decade. what can i say. booze and parties. “these are not the droids you are looking for”

hope you swell

and perfect dark did rock.

Pilot Wings. The day they release it on the Wii’s Virtual Console (or release a Wii version) will be a happy day.

Golden Eye…proximity mines!

MarioKart & Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are next in line on my list.

mrjadkins's avatar

I still have this game system. I play Perfect Dark and Rogue Squadron when I have free time. I know. Cheezy.

My favorite was Turok 2. Creepy music and those creepy kids saying “Help me Turok!” I used to own this game and lost it. I wish I could find it again.

simone54's avatar

Well….

Ocarina of Time is the best game ever made.

Both Banjo Kazooie games are outstanding

Jet Force Gemini would be too if you didn’t have to find though little white creatures.

and of course, still the best multi-player first person shooter….. Golden Eye.

Both The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time and Majora’s mask were awesome. Super Smash Brothers was awesome. Golden Eye took countless hours of my life. Mario 64 could be the best though. It was all new – “go wherever you want, do what you wanna do”. Now that was big time.

Traveosa's avatar

Thanks for all of your answers! I have enjoyed every single game listed on here. Especially Golden Eye. Ocarina of Time was also very nice.

jtvoar16's avatar

I would have to say my favorite was Golden Eye. But right next to that was Blast Corps, which they remade on the 3DO and damn! That was an awesome game! I would also have to place Zelda: OOT next to that one too, then one step below that would be Starfox, then right next to him… I would place Quest 64, only because it was my first RPG I understood and it was easy once I figured out how to play it, plus it was pretty looking.

golden eye with remote mines =D

but other than that uh….super smash bros!

flameboi's avatar

@ all golden eye fans
I thought I was the only one surviving person that loved the game (specially the hidden proximity mines, lol that made me jump like a 1000 times) good times :)

chutterhanban's avatar

The combination of Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf made this system the best system EVER.

Can I get an amen!?!??!

simone54's avatar

How come nobody has mentioned Super 64?

Maverick's avatar

Golden Eye, license to kill, pistols, facility, no oddjob – you are hereby challenged. ;)

Perfect Dark was also excellent, although often overlooked. It’s GoldenEye with better graphics and better multiplayer. Same development team.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@maverick lol i used to use pretty much that rule set when i played Golden Eye. No odd job lol. And of course you had to try and prove you were better than everyone by picking jaws and then winning.

simone54's avatar

No Odd Job was always a given.

stratman37's avatar

LOVED Perfect Dark, was SO bummed that it didn’t come out for the Xbox – only the 360.
And I think Golden Eye was THE reason to own a ‘64! Was it GE or PD that had those sentry guns that came as a briefcase and you just threw it up on a wall to deploy?

Jreemy's avatar

Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time and Harvest Moon. You can’t go wrong with either.

simone54's avatar

I liked the SNES Harvest Moon better…

Jreemy's avatar

@simone54 well, that is a given, but the question was about n64 games, so in that case, one should take what one can get.

Maverick's avatar

@stratman, ya pretty sure it was PD with the auto-guns. GE, it was proximity mines. ;)

Sakata's avatar

As most everyone has said, Goldeneye and Zelda are the best but I actually rebought the whole N64 system on eBay just to play Conkers Bad Fur Day.

Any game that starts you off as a squirrel waking up with a hangover and no idea what happened the night before is a winner in my book. The M15+ rating on it gave it even more worth.

Maverick's avatar

OMG, Conkers was awesome! Totally forgot about that. Thanks!

chutterhanban's avatar

If I’m not mistaken, that game is one of the most rare and expensive N64 games (along with Ogre Battle 64). Do you remember how much you paid for it?

robmandu's avatar

I agree with @Maverick and @Sakata, Conker the cussin’ drunk ass squirrel, FTW!

Waffle's avatar

Super Smash Bros.

Elerie's avatar

I love love love tetrisphere and Dr. Mario.
I work at a videogame store where we sell all of these games. You guys named all the most asked for games for sure! Mario Kart, mario 64, both zeldas, donkey kong 64, goldeneye, smash bros and mario parties are all the most popular on that system.

mowens's avatar

goldeneye or mario kart. either was used to settle roommate squables until my n64 broke.

Berserker's avatar

Add Golden Eye 007 to your collection, and you’ll own every single game that gives anyone a reason to have an N64.
I might be forgetting a Zelda game or two.
