How do Medicare part A and private insurance work together?

Can’t seem to get a straight answer on this:

I am eligible for Medicare but I am still working full-time with an excellent health insurance plan through my employer.
I am told to enroll in part A because it is free. How do they work together?
What does it mean when one is primary and one is secondary?

A year before I retired, I signed up for Social Security and Medicare and simply continued to use my company insurance as my primary, which covered me better than Medicare. If you want to know more about my experience, you’re welcome to pm me.
