Hi! I bought this coat in a surplus store, but I was wondering if this is a woman’s or not… I picked it up from a pile of jackets and coats in the men’s section. I searched the brand online and I just saw coats for women but I doubt that it’s the actual clothing brand, just stuff from Google. I live in a tropical place and I don’t know much about coats, will you tell me if it’s a woman’s or not?
Here is the photo: coat other url
Thank you very much!

I can’t see the picture. Website comes up, picture is blank
On a women’s coat, generally, the buttons will be on the right side of the wearer. I also look for breast darts.
The brand name is “British Khaki est. 1980”
I don’t think it’s well-known…
Depends on who’s wearing it.
@Seek I think you have it opposite. The men’s buttons are on the right. I tried putting on an invisible button-down shirt, and it was so much easier when they were on the right.
Could be…
But the trademark for the brand name was registered in 2004 by a women’s clothing company… So…
Looking at the collar and cuffs, I’d say it was a woman’s.
What size is it? I think women’s, if numbered, will be 8, 10, 12 ect while men’s are 46–48? (from what I’ve found in my coat closet)
@Ela Hi! It doesn’t say any size in number, it only says L.
@01101101 ‘ello! I’d say its wearer’s choice then : )
It’s not a woman’s coat, because the buttons are on the opposite side. But, the coat might be for either gender; unisex buttons default to a man’s side.
What would you like it to be?
Most clothing can be worn by
whomever likes it, and it fits the
way you wish it to.
It looks somewhat hermaphroditic to me.
With the buttons on the R side as they are, and with no obvious signs that it’s meant for a woman (I liked @Seek‘s thought about the breast darts, which would have been a giveaway), I’d say that it’s a nice-looking coat that a man could wear without comment. And women can wear men’s clothing – in general, as a rule – so you could go either way, if you want.
But if I were pressed, I’d say that this is “probably” meant for a woman, because even with a breast pocket that I would not expect on a woman’s coat, the overall size not as large as I would expect a “large” men’s size to be, the lapel is rounded in a way that’s uncommon on men’s outer clothing, and that breast pocket is so small as to be non-functional – which is also sadly typical of much women’s clothing: non-functional decoration. (Don’t get me started on the non-functionality of much of men’s formal wear.)
Men’s due to the way it buttons, and the fact that you already own it.
The breast pocket is small because that’s all that is/was needed. I have the exact same configuration of pockets on the coat I wore today, and my cell phone fits in the breast pocket perfectly.
I don’t think the pictures really gave us a good idea of the cut of the coat because the shoulders hang so far below the hanger – another good indication that it is, indeed, a large men’s coat.
If you intended for a male to wear this garment, you’re good.
Mens, based on button side
Is it proportioned for wider chest and hips or wider shoulders?
Does it look good on you? That’s the question to ask. Don’t worry about anything else
