Is there any significant difference in functionality between a ROKU streaming stick vs. the set top box?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) December 31st, 2015 from iPhone

One of the deal sites I check has a refurbished ROKU streaming stick (which attaches to TV by the HDMI port) plus remote for $15.

I’m seriously considering getting one. Experience/opinions anyone?

I have a couple of the older boxes and a roku 3, use them daily. Best set top boxes available. For 15 bucks, just try it!

I’ve heard lots of good things about the boxes but I’m especially interested in whether the streaming stick provides the same experience.

My Roku box as slots for USB and media inputs so I can play directly into my TV. I don’t think the stick can do that. There is no space.

That’s a good point. Thanks for the info.

The stick is kinda underpowered if you are using something like the ridiculously horrible sling.tv app for it. And to be fair all the stick devices suck. And the wifi is generally not as good compared to the full-sized counterparts. I read about this stuff a lot and it generally comes down to they are great in your scenario or they barely work at all. But if it was me I would totally roll the dice for 15 bucks. It might be perfect for you or it might be total shit.

edit: And if it is totally horrible I will pay 15+ shipping if it doesn’t work for you.
