Do you use the Humana Pharmacy?

Asked by Pachy (18610points) January 2nd, 2016

I’m trying to decide whether to start getting my prescriptions by mail via Humana Pharmacy. Mail is cheaper than my local pharma plus they give 90-day supplies, but I’ve read some negeative reviews about Humana. Can you please share any personal experience you’ve had?

I don’t use mail order pharmacy (not Humana but my insurance contracts with Medco). I have heard many stories of people who did not get their refills on time due to some administrative issue, and they’re left high and dry while the issue is resolved. I don’t like that. I go to Costco (many people don’t know that you don’t have to be a Costco member to use their pharmacy). Their medication prices are online and they’re often cheaper than anywhere else.

I use DocMorris

Note: I’m particularly interested in your Humana Phramcy experience rather than mail experience in general. Thanks.

Well, I have only done it twice with them, and they did send what I ordered in a timely manner.
The delivery guys did not check for ID though, even though they should.

My landlord is with Humans and there has been more than one occasion where his meds were delayed for one reason or another.

And he is a diabetic so you’d think that they would pay more attention to be sure that his order arrived in a timely fashion. Evidently not.

But they also have contracted with Rite Aid pharmacies to dispense medications to their patients for the same price as they charge for mail order. So, he has opted to do that instead.

And even with that, there are screwups where it ends up at a Rite Aid over in East or West Gibbip somewhere rather than the one conveniently located right around the corner. And this in spite of the fact that his is a longstanding order.

In short, he is less than thrilled with Humana regarding precsription fulfillment.

@Buttonstc: I know you made it extremely clear that you are looking ONLY for information regarding Humana Pharmacy, but just in general, when an insurance company contracts with a pharmacy like this, unless hordes of people complain to someone high up, nothing will change. So your landlord should contact someone at his insurance carrier, someone high up, like the CEO. Often the complaints like his don’t make it to ears that can do anything, if anything, they contact customer service who gives the run around.

Is there a postage charge for mail order prescriptions?

Pachy's avatar

All these comments have pretty much convinced me to I’m stick with my neighborhood pharmacy. They charge a few bucks more, but I suspect there’s a postage charge for having them mailed which would offset the small per-Rx savings. Thanks everyone.

@Pachy

Afaik he does not incur a postage charge. But I’ll ask him about that just to be sure
Check the PM which I sent you.

@jca

His insurance carrier is Humana, unfortunately.

Our medical plan requires us to use a mail order pharmacy that they specify (not Humana) for any maintenance prescription – where you are using the drug repeatedly.
We get a discount by using mail order: $4 generics are $10 for three months. More expensive co-pays like $40 are $100 for three months. So there is a financial incentive to use mail order.

I can re-order on line and check shipments. If it comes regular mail there is no charge. Ask for next-day or second-day delivery and there is a charge. There have been a couple of screwups in the two years we have used them. One thing I do is check their website to make sure the original prescription from the Doctor’s office actually made it to my account.

New prescriptions and non-renewable prescriptions can be filled locally, but not at Walgreens for some inexplicable reason.

The savings on the co-pay is what really makes this work..

@srmorgan: My insurance company has the same requirement, or else I have to pay the cost myself unless it’s a new prescription. Since the one medication I take is generic, I just pay the cost at Costco. It’s minimal, not sure what it is. I like picking it up myself and not relying on the mail order and possible issues. I don’t mind paying the money. I might mind if I took multiple drugs that were very expensive.
