How do I cook chicken thighs ? (details inside )

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) January 4th, 2016

I cooked five large chicken thighs in the electric frying pan for 30 min. Then I put in oven for 20 minutes. I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t have a meat thermometer. The oven is at 350 f. I put some pepper and salt on them. I’m using a roasting pan with the lid off.

Cut one open. If the juices run clear, they’re done. Enjoy!

I’m upset. I put the thighs in the fridge. I think that they are cooked.

Give it a try anyway. If they’re not too cold, there should be some juice.

I’m not hungry anymore. I need a hug. I’m going to take a nap and think about what I’ve done.

After cooking them for 50 minutes, they are probably somewhat overcooked. Cut into one and see if the meat is white, brown, or pink. If it’s pink, perhaps it is still undercooked, but I really doubt it. Now you have chicken for sandwiches tomorrow!

Thanks all.

Yes, as @dappled_leaves suggests, test one now so you know if it’s safe to eat later.

By the way, congratulations on trying to cook something you’ve never done before.

Honestly, most of the time I don’t know what I’m doing either! They sound really good, though.

Ok I tried a piece. It’s ok. I will save for later.

For next time, here’s an idea: Preheat oven to 350. Put the thighs in a pan with a little water (quarter inch of water). Put them in the oven. After about 40 minutes, brush the tops of the thighs with some barbecue sauce. If you like spicy barbecue sauce, mix some up in a little cup with some spices. Brush the bbq sauce on the tops of the thighs and bake for about another 15 minutes. Take them out of the oven and let them sit for about 10 minutes before you eat them, so the juices can rest.

They sound fine. Just remember to wash your hands well after handling raw chicken.

As a guideline, since it’s pretty obvious that you’re not an experienced cook, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to buy and make some pre-packaged ready-to-prepare foods, which only require you too cook the meat part separately. (I particularly like Kitchens of India Butter Chicken Curry, but there are “Chicken Helper” meals that others like, and so forth – suit yourself here.) The beauty of these prepared foods is that the cooking instructions for the meat are written in clear, easy-to-follow directions for the whole meal. So once you have cooked a meal or two following these instructions, you’ll have general guidelines to help you prepare the meat all by itself for other dishes.

I have no doubt that you overcooked the chicken, but you can probably salvage it in some kind of dish (such as the curry above, for example!) where you can simmer it in a broth or liquid that will help to keep it from drying out too much.

And that Butter Chicken Curry is awfully good stuff. I cook the rice alongside the curry, and they’re both done at about the same time – within minutes of each other.

@CWOTUS I had another piece of chicken. It was fine.

Perhaps you could ask for some recipes for chicken thighs. That might give you a range of simple ways to cook them in the future.

We have staff for that.

I’m still a terrible cook even though I have had quite a lot of practice! You are doing fine.

I use a slow cooker a lot. Also known as a crock pot. They are not expensive and you could get one on ebay I’m sure. You put the meat in with onions, garlic, mixed herbs and a bit of stock/wine/water/tomato passata. Then turn the dial to low and leave it for 8 hours. Some recipes call for browning and other precooking but I never do and it always works. What could be easier? So once you are ready to eat dinner, cook some potatoes and veg for a hearty traditional and so delicious meal.

Congratulations! @RedDeerGuy1 for cooking for yourself and trying something new! No fast food! Hurray!

You can rub a little olive oil on the thighs and the skin will crisp fine in the oven. They should be done (at 350 degrees) in about 40 minutes.

To add to the flavor, you can sprinkle them with curry powder or paprika or even chili powder. For even more favor and bite, you can try worchestershire sauce or sriracha sauce. Yum!
