How to find and delete duplicate files on a PC running Windows 7?

I am looking for software that will identify duplicate files and their locations so I can either keep as backups or delete. Some of the files are backedup on an external hard drive. Since this will be a one-time use (I hope), I do not want to spend much money; free would be nice.

All free software.
Type ‘duplicate’ in the search box. You will see several free programs. Read the description, download.
If you have Windows you can use the search from the start menu, you just type in the name of the program or file you want to find if there is a double to in the field and search. If you just want to check genetic files or programs, you can type in .exe for instance, and it will pull up all the executable files and show you were they are, if they are in the same folder one will have (1) or (2), etc. depending if there are more than one copy. It may take channeling your ”inner Columbo” to find some of them, but with time and diligence you can find them.
I have always liked Auslogic’s software, so I would have to at least mention their Duplicate File Finder. I’ve also heard good things about Anti-Twin though I haven’t used it myself.
There are others that I have used, but they were not exactly user-friendly.
Thanks all. I will be trying the three suggested programs starting with @jerv‘s suggestion.
