If Vladimir Putin is writing in English and signing his name, how would he spell it?

Asked by flo (13313points) January 5th, 2016

He probably doesn’t need to write in English, but just for theorotical purposes. In French it’s Poutine. In English it’s Putin. Are there other ways of spelling it using the English alphabet? If different countries that speak the same language spell it differently would he spell it according to which country the person he’s writing to is from?

He would sign it as he always signs it.
Why, would you actually translate your name into another language for a signature?
I know that I would not.
Do you think that someone named “John Smith” would change his signature to “Johannes Schmidt” when conversing with a German? I do not think so.

Владимир Путин is how he spells his name in Russian alphabet. . If he is writing in English alphabet…..

I think if he was signing he would sign in his Russian signature. That’s most likely, but not necessarily.

If he was writing his name in English I assume he would use the spelling we use in America. Some names you can spell several ways in English, but I’m pretty sure our pronunciation of his name is pretty close, and we spell it phonetically, so not much need to change it. He could if he wanted to though.

@flo They would spell it as Putin in French too, if that didn’t mean whore. So they call him Vladimir Gravy instead of whore.

@janbb and @JLeslie But why would he pick Putin (the English speaking countries spelling) and not Poutine( the French speaking countries’ spelling) or other?
@zenvelo It’s not just a choice between Poutine and Putin, there’s Pootine too.
Poutine doesn’t mean gravy by the way it’s the name of a dish with potatoes curds and gravy.

Well, you did say if he were writing his name in English so why wouldn’t he spell it the way it is spelled in English?? It is phonetic.

@janbb I understand. Imagine color and colour etc. If he was writing to someone in America and to someone in Britain and they had different ways of spelling his name, how would he spell it?

Putin is smart, so he would spell it the correct way, colour.

@flo He can pick whatever he wants when writing his name in English. Or, maybe you mean using our alphabet (also used in the Romance languages) and not English?

My name can be spelled Leslie or Lesley, I get to choose. Well, my mom chose. Many names have two or more spellings.

He chooses whichever on what basis? He isn’t just a random person.

On the basis that when using a name in a foreign language, there isn’t a strong rule.

What is important with signatures is to be consistent. How to spell it is a little loose.
