How far before your honesty disappears?

Asked by msh (4270points) January 7th, 2016 from iPhone

This is an All or Nothing situation. What will you choose to do?
You are having some hard times. You’re not eating well because there is more month than money, lately. Your shoes aren’t fitting well and it makes your feet hurt. You’ve broken off a corner of a back tooth, which means another crown- with no dental insurance. It’s been four years since new glasses. Your transportation is ‘iffy’ at it’s best, but you keep plugging along.
You are on your way somewhere, and the Brink’s Money Truck (vehicle services for businesses/banks to have secure and arm-guarded transfers of money) in front of you hits a bump in the road.
The back door of the Brink’s truck flies open, and coins and paper money is falling out and scattering on the ground. People come and start grabbing the lost money. There is a lot! The Brink’s truck keeps going for another 2 blocks before turning back. Some people grab money and take off. Some are gathering money to put it in a pile to give it back.
You are gathering money also.

- Would you take what you quickly gathered and leave the scene?
– Would you help collect the money for the company’s driver?

Q? -Would it make a difference in your decision if the local news reports that night that they have video and are ID-ing the vehicles and individuals who were there? You aren’t really sure there was any video cameras around at all!
Whatcha gonna do?

No, I would just help gather the money or at least walk away. The whole situation is just like seeing a wallet on the street and getting away with it. And that’s stealing.

Ignoring how bizarrely unlikely this premise is (have you ever seen the inside of a Brink’s truck? It’s a safe full of safety deposit boxes. There’s not a Scrooge McDuck pile of cash just sitting in there) how the eff are they actually going to ID the vehicles that happen to be on some random stretch of road?

Honestly I would probably drive by without realizing what was happening, and then kick myself when it dawned on me, when it was too late to go back.

My initial reaction would be to stop and gather up what ever I could, immediately call Brinks and let them know what happened and that I have their money and hope they offer a reward. But since there was additional money gathered up by others I would run the risk of being accused of not returning all the money I gathered up and would not want to be caught up in something like that and just keep walking.

There is no limit to my honesty. If you can’t handle the truth, you came to the wrong person. I do the right thing every time.

You have ‘running quickly’ as a topic but with ill fitting shoes that could be a problem. I’m going to hand it in and hope for a reward.

I would not get out of my car.

This has got to be a reality TV show, and I’m one of the few people in America not looking for my 15 minutes of fame.

I cut my teeth on Candid Camera.
