Do people sit at the island in your kitchen?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) January 7th, 2016 from iPhone

If you have an island. Do you wish you had more cabinet space instead of the space for the chairs?

I’m interested in all experience and opinions on this.

Adding on another question about islands, do you prefer no island when only a very narrow one will fit? Narrow meaning 2.5 feet or less.

I have a very small kitchen with a sort of attached island (peninsula?) jutting from a wall. Because I have no interest in people sitting there, I put short bookcases (but I guess any shelving that fits would work) for visible storage.

ETA I prefer to have the counter space, so I wouldn’t want it gone.

I have a couple of bar stools at mine. The other side actually has cabinet space

My last house had an island, but putting stools there would have been awkward because of nowhere to put one’s knees (the top did not overhang) and it would have interfered with the table in the eating area.

My girlfriend had a place with an island and space for stools and eating, though, and it was convenient for breakfast and lunch and to carry on a conversation while someone was cooking..

I have an island and love the extra working/cooking space. It fits well and serves us well and yes people will sit at the island but usually just to work on stuff like mail and homework etc. Our cabinets are plentiful and full. If I had more cabinets instead of seating at the island it would only mean more stuff in the cabinets.

I had a bar with some stools. People use to sit there all the time. At my cousins home everyone is always sitting around the island in her kitchen. Of course if there is no chairs, it doesn’t happen.
I wouldn’t want an island in a very narrow space. I like as much room to move in a kitchen as possible. Even though my cousins kitchen is extremely roomy it can feel awkward and crampy to work in her kitchen when people are around the island. I also don’t like distraction when I’m cooking. I prefer to be alone or with maybe one other cook (my husband) when cooking.

I had an island, but I sunk it. No, people didn’t sit there. Mainly because (and this was so stupid) the seat side stuck out into the living room.
In my house, we do gather in the kitchen, but there are lots of places to sit. Plus my kitchen is big. It’s just a nice place to come together.

I have a sort of island in my holiday house – it’s a tall table. We got it second hand so not sure what its original purpose was. My sister has a theory it was an altar in a small church. People sit at it and we prep food there. In our other kitchen we plan to extend. The table which is in the middle will move into the new dining area and the kitchen extended round what is now the dining area. We will put in an island with both cabinets and seating. I am really looking forward to more cabinets and more worktop. I think people will sit at the island to chat to the person in the kitchen. We also have an armchair in the kitchen which is really popular

I have an island in the kitchen but it doesn’t have an overhang so no stools. The island is very useful for working – it has a butcher block top.

Eat your meat, how can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?

She takes out the top cabinets. It looks nice but I’m not sure there would be enough storage space for me. She has a pantry and a wooden island.

Foreplay has no place at the dessert island, we didn’t arrive on the love boat.

We don’t have an island. My kitchen is square but there is a breakfast bench area. People sit there while we cook and talk.

I wouldn’t compromise storage space if the area is small. Island benches are great if there’s room, but if having one means less storage than you need or that the kitchen feels cramped, I wouldn’t have one.

I already have an island in my kitchen, and it’s called “dining room”. Each room serve their own job and can’t be interchangable.

I don’t have an island in the galley-style kitchen. I do have two dogs and a cat who, in their own passive/aggressive ways, are trying their hardest to try to trip up Mommy and kill her in the resulting fall. I believe they chicken out at the last moment because of my thumbs. They can’t open the food tins without my thumbs. So, ha-ha! on them!
