Is anyone trying to eat better in January?

Asked by Stinley (11525points) January 9th, 2016 from iPhone

How are you getting on? I’m calorie counting again with a small deficit. I lost a fair bit of weight a couple of years ago but a little has crept on again. So I hope a couple of months paying close attention to what I am scoffing will do the trick

I am trying to save money on food. Also am trying to find a routine for better eating.

@Stinley Running a small calorie deficit is the right idea. Kudos!
I have been conscious of what and how much I eat all my adult life. If I get on the scale and it is higher than expected I just eat a little less the next few days. I never need the second dollop of ice cream or another piece of pie. One is plenty. It is much easier to make small corrections daily than waiting until you are 20, 50, 100 pounds over weight to turn te ship around. Life is so much better when you are in shape.

I am trying to “shop from my freezer” and avoid buying and bringing in new food as much as possible. I would like to empty my basement freezer by Spring so I can turn it off and just use the freezer in my fridge.

The problem is I do not have anyone who shares this same priority. Nobody, but me, is willing to eat freezer burned hot dog rolls, or a 2 year old frozen turkey that I got for free in 2013 for spending over $75 at the local grocery store. It took weeks for me (and the fox) to finish eating one from 2012 – and it was still delicious.

I just defrosted a container with about 3 pounds of lasagna that has been in there for over a year. I ate ½ pound of it for breakfast today – with a handful of blueberries, a banana and green tea.

Maybe I should host a Fluther food party.

Not yet sure if it is really a good move but I am incorporating less red meat, carbs and more plant based foods into my diet. The best part is wife and kids seem to enjoy the gradual transition. Truly “healthy” cooking takes a bigger effort to achieve tasty meals but so far so good.

@Cruiser Somebody gave me a container of Trader Joe’s Everyday Seasoning for Christmas. So far it makes everything taste better. I am even using it on salad instead of dressing. It comes in a grinder and adds flavor and texture to food.

I am always trying to get better.

@LuckyGuy Very cool! I may just have to get that handy dandy spice mix as I pretty much use that very blend except I mash it up in a mortar and pestle. Coriander rocks for seasoning pretty much everything.

@LuckyGuy this worked for me before. I also found this article strangely comforting : “If you think of obesity as a chronic relapsing condition, you could say well maybe every five years you have to diet for 12 weeks”

@AshLeigh I think setting goals helps. Not too unachievable but enough to see some progress

Somewhere at the end of last year I lost my appetite. Or at least ‘hunger’ (growling stomach, etc.) as I’ve known it. I’m eating less than ever, and not losing an ounce.

I’ve cut way back on carbonated beverages and eliminated alcohol. I’ve been eating more fruit and grains. I’ve taken probiotics. I’ve been a Pescatarian for years, and I’ve eaten fish only a few times since Xmas. Lately I’ve taken to drinking a cup of coffee of a morning as that was previously a purgative for me.

In short I have eaten relatively healthy for years. I’ve ramped that up since Xmas, and I go around feeling full and bloated all the time, and my waistline is the the biggest it’s ever been.

I had to scoop heavy, wet snow off the driveway today. Maybe the extra exercise (and the bean soup I ate for lunch) will kick something in.

@ibstubro sounds a little bit unusual. Have you had a check up just to make sure your health is ok? A food intolerance can cause bloating and the other symptoms you describe

Absolutely!

Oh, wait.. I thought you said “butter”

Nah, I’m just messing around with it at the moment, @Stinley.
Today I’m going to try a little apple cider vinegar.
It’s bitter cold here today so I’m likely home bound. That should mean some cooking. Maybe that’ll spur my appetite!

Now I need to get that cobbler going. :)

I finally reached the point where I felt empty, and started feeling hungry again.
At first it wasn’t until 1–2 in the afternoon, but over time I’m back to morning hunger (re-starting my coffee habit might have helped that.)

I’m trying to stay at the fresh fruit and veggies with doses of beans for protein and propulsion. Some seafood and a little dairy. Bread occasionally. Daily candy. I can’t help it. Dark chocolate covered cranberries, at least.

Anyway, I am eating better this year, so far. I’ve laid off the chips altogether, eating crackers instead, and in moderation.

I’m not sure this is weight loss diet, but it’s healthier. :-)
