How much would a 17-year-old make per hour stocking shelves at Wal-Mart?

Asked by Nevada83 (1029points) January 24th, 2016

I have chosen what I want my starter job to be, so I’m wondering how much money would I make per hour doing this?

More than $9 / hour. That was the going rate in Canada. 20 years ago. I would be happy with $15/hour.

Some states you have to be 18 or older to work in retail, unless it is a family business (Mom & Pop shop).
Some of the shelve-stockers work as a merchandisers for the company that makes the product i.e. Coca-Cola or Duracell.

$ 12.00 an hour if you can get it. ($480.00/week before taxes and such).

According the this, and other articles, Walmart will be raising its minimum, hourly wage to $10 an hour in February 2016. I don’t know if the cost of living in your area or the number of hours you work, part-time vs. full-time would make a difference in your wage but that $10 per hour looks like it would be your starting wage as of 2/16.

Probably considerably less than the puny amount disqualifying you from food stamps. Of course, living with your parents will probably disqualify you anyway.

@Nevada83 It depends on where you live but not that much. Do you know what you want to do as a career though? Even at 17 be thinking about what will help get you where you need to be. Even seemingly mediocre jobs like forklift driver or working in sporting goods at Walmart can help you. Especially if it will expose you to knowledge or allow you to see what people doing jobs you may want someday are like. Want to be a vet? work as a cashier at a pet store. Want to be an engineer? Find a company that will let you do basic CAD work for them. Want to be a chef? Start by washing dishes at a fancy restaurant….etc. Doing this will put you at a major advantage when it comes to choosing and making a career successful.

Probably minimum wage. But give it all you’ve got!

10 bucks an hour starting next week, according to the above.

Wait.
How much before or after deductions and taxes?

Dutchess_III's avatar

That really doesn’t matter. Everyone pays taxes.

msh's avatar

If there were a sliding tax rule, perhaps.

What sliding tax rule are you referring to? Are you talking about tax brackets?

It all falls in with paycheck money trickle down.
Benefits, once out, will change take home. Taxes have already had their way with the amount. It really hurts the beginning workers.
Tax deductions don’t start to help until April 15 the next year.
Those supporting others don’t do well.
Some get increases help at the yearly, the end probationary period, or # of months evaluation.
There would be night-time differential, which helps. (usually 3D shift) for stocking.
That is why many/most use these positions operate as a supplimental incomes. spousal family additional income, moonlighting, boosting retirement amounts, etc.
Example- Wallyworld was recently in trouble when it was proven that women were not being promoted in ratio with males. There were also salary questions, which got addressed- but not publicly.
Some younger workers trying to support families and attend school simultaneously have to tread a lot of water to benefit.
If a union mandates all worker-participation, there goes more money out. That’s always something some forget about asking in their interviews.
More money out.
If 401K deductions gets in on the fun, the worker can at least get it back- when they leave.
It’s so hard. I feel bad for those who so desperately need every penny.

@msh Everyone knows that. It’s really making a simple question, asked by a 17 year old, far too complicated.

Then why did you ask me?
