What don't you like about your Government?

Asked by Cruiser (40454points) January 26th, 2016

This question was prompted by a story I read that Americans hate their Government more than ever. This is not a fluff piece wanting to stir things up it was based on a a new survey from the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

””Satisfaction is linked to broader goals in the political system that it wants to maximize, like confidence and trust,” said Forrest Morgeson, director of research at the ACSI. “It’s much more difficult to govern if the entire population dislikes you.””

What department, service, policy etc, has you hating on your Government??

I would like anyone to answer this but just say what country you are from. I also put this in Social but am hoping for some genuine answers.

American. I don’t like obstructionism and lack of compassion that many in Congress seem to operate with.

The “For Sale” sign out front.

Also, the intrusion of religious fundamentalism into policy considerations.

Their dishonourable cowardice towards and outright cooperation with enemy spy organisations and their masters:
Cooperating with the NSA to spy on the European citizenry.
Refusing to grant Edward Snowden political asylum.
Conspiring with their colonial overlords to push through international “trade agreements” that will serve no one but multination corporations, and keeping the contents of those agreements and negotiations a secret.

Edit: “the obstructionism”

Three biggies right off the bat! @janbb Your answer is a big part of what I suspect is driving down the Satisfaction Rate shown in the graph of my link.

@thorninmud Religion has IMHO always influenced many policy considerations but it does seem the hand waving from the Religious Right is at a all time high.

@ragingloli Interesting observations but I don’t think many average Americans are overly worried about Snowden being kept out of our country and do agree with you on the trade BS that we are famous for.

Loli is talking about the German government, I’d wager, not the American government. Seeing as they are German, and all.

That you usually need to be rich to be a part of it.

I guess that, both on a local level and a national level, I feel that I don’t have enough of a bankroll to purchase representation. I believe that one of the purposes of government is to protect me from you and you from me but I see it as a system where the decisions can be bought for the right price. The moneyed interests can, and will, buy protection as they see fit or steamroller your rights to do whatever they deem in their best interest whether we are talking about gutting the EPA to allow you to pollute the environment with impunity or getting a plot of land re-zoned so you can build your commercial center in the midst of a residential area. Things, objects have become the driving force. What should be a system of government OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people has been usurped by the almighty dollar.

Another pet peeve is the gerrymandering done, and I know it is done on both sides but the Republican party seems to have perfected the process, in order to insure that representation is not fair to all. If my candidate loses, so be it. But if my candidate didn’t stand a chance because lines were drawn to minimize their support, I have a problem with it. The result is that those who are on the losing team end up with absolutely no representation at all. Those elected seem to have the attitude that they are there to represent only the views of those who put them in office, not their entire constituency.

I am not sure why this system is perpetuated except that at some time both parties benefit by its practice it against the other. Here in Texas I am hoping that the powerful and long lasting suppression of the Democrats will be incentive enough to promote change once, and if, they can ever get back into power. I will not be holding my breath however.

Another abominable thing about my government can be expressed in this humorous aphorism:

Q: What is the difference between USA and USB?

A: One connects to all of your devices and accesses the data,

the other is a computer hardware standard.

That I don’t control it.

I’m unhappy with the REAL owners of the government posing as its victims.

USA. The way it’s mostly owned by big corporations, and pretends to be a democracy while doing what corporations want instead of what the people want.

And most of the results of that. Wars, environmental destruction, pollution, siphoning of money into the coffers of corporations and people who already have tons of money, lying, sponsoring industrial abuses of the land, foreign people, working-class people, etc Lack of health care, lots of unsupported people, the fake “wars” on “drugs” and “terror”. Spying on people and erosion of civil rights. Farcical political system with clown candidates and corporate sponsorship and signing up for one of two big meaningless political parties practically necessary for election. Stupid election system instead of something much better that allows more than two candidates to be viable (such as instant-run-off voting). Laws written by corporations. Revolving doors between industry and government positions. Etc.

USA:

Leaders that appeal to short term rather than long term solutions.

Leaders that choose to implement programs that feel good as opposed to doing good.

The Federal Government’s intrusion into matters that are those of the states.

The government’s refusal to crack down on the influx of counterfeit products especially by Asian nations.

Refusal to protect the Dollar by ignoring overseas counterfeiting.

The Fed’s reduction of it’s credit rating from AAA to AA+.

Government’s refusal to address the illegal immigration problem by simply aggressively enforcing laws already on the books.

Refusal to dismantle the clearly proven worthless and expensive TSA.

Refusal to support industries that create real products instead of finance.

Refusal to take on unglamorous projects like the repair of failing infrastructure.

All manner of programs that are nothing more than state mandated wealth distribution.

The slow but sure project to separate law abiding citizens from their firearms step by step.

The refusal to observe an individual’s electronic “right to privacy.”

Refusal to clean up the voting inaccuracy mess.

The Executive branch taking on the duty of the Legislative, upsetting the delicate and vital balance of power.

Bailouts that force me to pay for automotive and banking products I have no interest in.

More to come I’m sure.

Simply put, government is way too involved in my personal life. Everything I do or don’t do is dependent on government regulation or tax code. I have to watch how much gas I sell to insure I don’t sell too much lest I incur dramatic regulatory costs. If I choose to upgrade something I can’t do it to optimize my business but rather to optimize my taxes or optimize the regulatory impact (usually both). It’s simply too much and that’s why business is moving out of this country.

Because of things like whats happening in Flint MI now. Why the hell are celebrities giving money to people for safe drinking water in a supposed first world country?

Blackberry's avatar

@thorninmud what do you mean by for sale sign?

thorninmud's avatar

@Blackberry I mean that our political system is so dependent on raising enormous amounts of campaign money that those who are in a position to bankroll candidates or parties get to buy into the legislative process.

Cruiser's avatar

@thorninmud I wholeheartedly agree with you on campaign dollars spent especially when we have 1 Presidential candidate and another potential candidate who are ready and able to spend a billion dollars to buy the Presidency. Something very wrong with this picture.

How come nobody mentioned the lack of a solid border between US and Mexico? Or that our military is underfunded or that the government is trying to take our guns or that they are forcing us to marry gays or that buy health insurance that we don’t want or creating an environment that makes job creation near impossible or forcing us to have clean air and water and wasting money on the so called “global warming crisis” that is really a boondoggle or (except for @Jaxk ) over regulate everything?

Are these not major concerns?

Darth_Algar's avatar

Our military is underfunded? Jesus Christ, we spend more on it than the next 12 countries (including powerhouses like Russia and China) combined.

Also, @rojo, do tell – when were you forced to marry a gay person?
