What would you do if your child was 17, moved to a new town with you, hates his new school, and misses his old friends terribly?

Asked by Nevada83 (1029points) February 2nd, 2016

This child is me… My friends picked the song “You Should Be Here” by Cole Swindell to compare how much they miss me to.

Suck it up, do well in school, and know that you’ll be out of there soon enough and off to college on your own.

Let him Skype his friends.

Like the @Rarebear, “Grow up,”
I moved at 14 from one side of the US to another. Missed older place at first but in the time I grew to like where I ended up. Found new friends and interests. Involved with theater and played a musical instrument in three different groups.

I’d try to help my child settle into their new home and town. I get that it’s hard to move away from your friends and everything you know, but sometimes parents don’t have a choice. That’s where their work is or there’s some other reason they need to move the family.

Join in at school. Participate in activities you love with a new group of friends. Before long you’ll have two great groups of mates. Skype and text your old mates. Do something novel and write them a real letter! Don’t just focus on your past though. Look to the future and see this as an opportunity to learn and experience new things.

For now, keep a low profile and stay below the radar at school. You don’t want to be branded as The New Kid. Very soon, you’ll meet some good, worthy friends and feel more comfortable.

Walk around your new town and look for beautiful, interesting things. Maybe there are some historic buildings worth seeing. Perhaps there’s a waterfall or a lovely park.

I wish you the best of luck. I, too, have been The New Kid, so your question resonates deeply.

Don’t worry about it…sooner or later you’ll make new friends and forgot about old ones (or won’t miss them that much)..i had to do the same thing about age of 16 and was in similar position you’re now…but was doing ok after couple of months..so cheer up..))

I’d try to support them. My family moved to another continent when I was eleven, and I hated it for about five months. That’s a long time, when you’re still rather young. At 17, I imagine I would have had an even more difficult time settling in.

Good luck to you. Find the support you need, both from friends, and from your family. Try to see what may be good about your new situation. In the long run, that’s what will make you feel better.
