Where did chinchillas originate from?

Are they rodents? and where did they come from?

I used to remember this but you are better just googling it. I remember something about them living in “tundra” like environments mountainy areas. They are a rodent the last I checked. The furry coats are for the cold climate they live in. But please research further, to assure that this is correct.
