Decent cheap beginner piano keyboard?

Asked by jaytkay (25810points) February 4th, 2016

I would like to learn some rudimentary piano skills.I was given a working Casiotone MT-36 keyboard.

It seems about right for my low ambitions, but it’s filthy, it was collecting dust in a garage for many years.

I’m capable of dismantling and cleaning it, but before I invest the time, I wanted to see what is available in the $50-or-less range.

I see lots of options available, used items on eBay. But I have no idea what to look for.

What keyboard would you buy for $50 from eBay?

You can’t go wrong with any model Casio you can afford. If it was me I would be looking for a full scale keyboard but that will cost more. Not sure what functions you are looking for but there are some mind bending functions that allow you to record and even transcribe your playing. Plus many can come with full ensemble accompaniment that you can play along with. My fav is pianos that allow you to pick and choose sound sampling of a Steinway concert grand piano…playing through that is amazing!

I don’t want to spend more than $50 right now until I can play a little. It’s a very low priority for me. I’m going to go ahead and clean this thing up over the weekend.

I’ll have a much better idea of what features I want when I learn to play a little.

@jaytkay I would put that $50.00 into good headphones or an amplifier that will elevate your experience while pounding the ivories of your keyboard!

I think you could get a decent keyboard anywhere from fifty to five hundred. You should either get one with 76 or 88 keys. I know you don’t want to spend more than fifty, but I honestly think you should go for the bigger investment. That way you don’t have to upgrade for awhile.

@AshlynM Thanks, that confirms what I was thinking after a little more research. If I decide to buy another keyboard, it would be worthwhile to up the budget to $100.

I cleaned the free keyboard today. Dismantled it and put the case and keys through the dishwasher. I’ll play with this one for a while and decide if I want to invest in something a little better.

There are always free or cheap pianos on Craigslist. Take a look.
