Can I paint a range hood?
Our stove range hood is in desperate need of replacing. A friend donated a brand new one to us, but it’s almond colored and our appliances are white.
Will an enamel, heat resistant white spray paint work? Or will it start peeling?

Should do fine. I’d rough-sand the existing paint first, then tack it clean with a damp cloth before painting. Give the paint something to stick to.
For funsies, here’s a video of a guy taking a hilarious amount of time taping off his entire kitchen with newspaper to spraypaint his range hood, in an effort to avoid the ten minutes it would have taken him to unscrew the thing from the cabinet. Thing looks nice, though.
Yes. I’d use high temperature paint just in case. It comes in most of the basic colors. You can buy a can of the stuff for about $6.
I agree…clean it thoroughly, rough sand it, then use a high-temp appliance.
Go for it. Sand with rough then finer and finer (higher numbers mean finer). Automobile hi-temp white paint, like this “Krylon 1505 White High Heat and Radiator Paint.”
Spray outside on a dry and windless day. Many thin coats with a light sanding of fine in between coats.
I don’t see why not. A friend of mine painted her stove. Just buy the paint that’s good for high temperature. Make sure it will adhere ok. Maybe scratch it up with some sandpaper??
I know that higher numbers mean finer, @Tropical_Willie! I can even rattle those numbers off the top of my head!
Thanks you guys! Thanks!
That’s right you were in the business.
The actually make paint just for this Use some steel wool to clean it up first.
I used a high temp paint on my barbecue, and it works great.
Yes. Sand it with a very fine sandpaper and then use tack cloth to get every little bit of dust off. Then spray it with a thin coat of oil-based kilz primer. Then spray it lightly with appliance paint. When it dries apply another thin coat. Be very careful about any logos or switches. It should look like new.
He did it yesterday. So far so good!
Federal law prohibits the use of certain colors on range hoods; Puce is right out as is Feldgrau but other than this, and a few others, sure! Go to town. Just check the Federal Manual of Approved Range Hood Colors, Volumes 1 – 5 first. these are updated every three years so be sure to get the latest version you can find
Federal law prohibits certain colors for range hoods? Seriously? Why?
LOLLL!!!! The restrictions probably came out after the influx of god awful gawdy colored appliances in the 60’s and 70’s, like green, turquoise green, cadet blue, woodtone brown, petal pink, canary yellow! They said, “Don’t ever let us do that again!”
Now your attacking the Brady Bunch house. Not ok. ~
Avocado! That’s the green I was looking for. I couldn’t find it in my brain. Ghastly stuff. And all the Tupperware was that color too.
We had avocado appliances for a while when I was growing up. My mom didn’t pick it, they were in a house we bought. The carpet was that sculpted looking stuff. Green also. She got rid of that pretty fast.
We had our house built in 1968. For the longest time we had green shag. We girls were forced to rake it every so often. My girlfriends in high school thought that was the funniest thing!
