Have you ever injured yourself really bad doing something simple?

Asked by somewomenarenicemaybe (332points) February 7th, 2016

Last night I was laying back into bed and I hit the back of my head on the corner of a dresser. I cut my head so bad there was blood all over my hands and I spent the night in the bathroom holding a cloth on my head trying to stop the bleeding and trying not to throw up from hitting my head so hard. I just wanted to go to sleep.

I was cutting up cooked chicken in order to make fresh chicken salad. Knife slipped, cut off top of my left ring finger.

OUCH!!! I did a similar thing recently.

While passing potato across a newly acquired mandoline, I shaved my thumb, which necessitated my driving myself to emergency. You never saw so much blood!

I will NEVER have another one of those things in my house !!!

I was lifting a fairly heavy box at work and hurt my back. It took 9 months to heal. I was in so much pain at times I cried in my office. I had to wear a back brace, only flat shoes, couldn’t lift more than ten pounds, couldn’t sit up straight without being in agony. It was so bad.

Haha…oh yeah, just recently I hit my head hard on the corner of a duck house here on the ranch property I live on, Had a nice lump and scrape on my temple. I also tripped over a rock and went down and badly sprained my ankle and cut my knee, then fell again and re-sprained the same ankle, TWICE in less than 8 weeks. I am now wearing an ankle brace every day.
One more episode of lameness and I will need to be shot. lol

@Pachy

That’s why these mandolnes all come with a guard with which you spear the food to be sliced and that guard keeps your fingers away from the sharp blade.

Even experienced chefs always use the guard (or push the food item with the palm of their hand rather than their fingers). This would be for items with a wide flat surface like potatoes.

Yes. I punctured my palm opening the shells of scallops. It scared me but I’m still typing and playing the piano just fine.

A few years ago I was sitting in my computer chair and dropped something behind me. I leaned over the armrest and went to pick it up off the floor. This was enough to re-break a few ribs I had broken years ago.

I went to pick up a t-shirt and laughing hurt like hell for months after that.

How much time do you have? The OP’s example reminds me of the many times I busted my head open the most interesting one was here in the suburbs is a full scale replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and in the old days you were allowed to climb the stairs to the top where all the bells were. I took a short cut across the viewing deck under a bell and stood up too soon and literally rang the bell and my bell. That really hurt! On the way back down the stairs I noticed drops of blood on the stair and mentioned to my friend oh look someone must be bleeding. I noticed more and more drops of blood and then saw that trickle of blood was coming from me! By the time I got down I looked like Carrie. Head wounds really bleed out in a big way.

If you’ve banged your head and you feel nauseous, you should seek medical attention. You could have concussion.

Like others, I’ve injured myself a few times while doing simple things. I once dropped a knife which speared my foot. One that really sticks in my mind is the time I tried to climb out of a Mini. My handbag got caught around my feet and I ended up on my knees on the pavement. The worst part was – I broke my arm. The medical staff kept asking me if I’d been drinking because it was such a stupid thing to do. I hadn’t. Not a drop. It was just a silly accident.

Years ago I was surfing when a huge wave knocked me off my board and I dislocated my shoulder. The ER report stated my cause of injury as being ” slammed into the bottom of the ocean.” lol

I was getting out of the car a few weeks ago and somehow shut the car door on my leg. The edge of the door was very sharp and cut my leg badly plus I got a huge bruise (which I am still sporting weeks later). It really hurt too!

Busted three ribs playing soccer several years back. Not really my fault, I had as much right to the ball as the goalie whose head did the damage.

I have no idea how I did this but I managed to twist my knee awkwardly and painfully . I was just walking. And then big ouch.

So now I’m being super careful not to tweak it wors . Stepping very slowly and gingerly.

And speaking of ribs. Last winter I’m just walking out of the garage and didn’t notice that on the slight overhang/incline there was a thin sheet of slick ice.

Didn’t even have time to throw out my hands or anything. Straight down on my right side bam. I didn’t know how many ribs I cracked but couldn’t draw a deep breath for several months. Dr. didn’t feel X-rays were necessary since taping doesn’t work out any better than letting them heal naturally (and sometimes compromises breathing even further)

Thanks to the lesson learned by @johnpowell (which he shared in a Q I posted) I managed to avoid re-breaking them by being super conscious and careful.

But I’m now very paranoid about nearly invisible sheets of ice :)

Yes indeed, @Buttonstc, clearly I behaved foolishly (which I
daresay is the cause of most accidents). This was the very first time I had ever used a mandoline and stupidly, I didn’t read the instructions thoroughly.

Plus I have a long history of cutting myself with sharp instruments.

Plus I am not now or ever have been good in the kitchen.

Nothwithstanding all that, thanks for your input.
