Favorite mascara?
I’m not having much luck finding a mascara I like lately. What’s your favorite – drugstore or otherwise?

I’ve spent decades and fortunes on the same quest ;-) The results of my research are the following:
“Designer” brands (Chanel, Lancome, Este Lauder, etc.) are no better than drugstore brands, and in many cases, are worse. Definitely not worth the price.
I favor Cover Girl’s “Lash Blast” in the orange tube.
The Rimmel products are pretty good, too.
Good luck!
Beauty Without Cruelty Paraben-free Mascara – Waterproof Cocoa.
This product is a nice, simple mascara that covers well but without clumping. It doesn’t promise to make my eyelashes bigger, plumper, longer, more voluminous, etc.; it just does a subtle job of making them look good.
I’ve been using Maybelline’s The Colossal Volum’ Express for a couple of years now.
Tried to deflate to a “normal” lash look… Can’t make myself do it. I like ‘em big.
@picante Agreed! I’ve tried the “higher end” mascaras about five times and I wasn’t impressed a single time. I’m perfectly happy with drugstore brands.
@Seek Me, too! My eyelashes are really long, but they don’t curl on their own, so I like something that kind of holds them up without looking clumpy or spidery. So that’s one I’ll definitely try.
I second @picante. I really like Cover Girls Lash Blast in the orange container. Inexpensive and doesn’t flake off under my eyes.
I’ve stuck by Cover Girl for a long time. Decades. It works as well as any of the fancy stuff, and I don’t feel ridiculous buying it. I almost never use mascara any more, but when I do, that’s my choice.
I spend a lot of money on mascara. Lancôme Definicils first, and then Lancôme Hypnose layered on top of the Definicils. The bottom lashes I often only put the Definicils. I used to get complements on my lashes often. People have asked me ten times over what mascara I use. Not as much now that I am older, and I also have lost quite a bit of lashes.
There are mascara base coats, I recommend not spending your money on them, and use the double mascara method instead. This way your “base coat” is an actual mascara, and when you want a more natural look you can use it alone.
The thicker mascaras often feel wet and very gloppy (Hypnose) but using a defining mascara first (Definicils) usually eliminates that feeling.
I try to buy the mascaras when there is a gift with purchase I like. The mascara lasts me 6 months, so it’s not that terrible over time. Sometimes I keep it longer, but it’s best not to keep mascara very long. Often the GWP’s have Definicils minis, and I don’t need to buy that.
In my experience drug store brands aren’t as good, but I might try the Cover Girl jellies mentioned above. I buy drug store brand if it works well. With make-up there can be a vast difference in quality, but whenever I can buy drug store I’m happy to spend less.
I love Loreal Voluminous. It’s sold here at Walmart, Target, & drug stores. I also like the Marc Jacobs mascara if you’re looking a little more high end.
