What is a personal tax ID number and where can I find it?

Asked by janbb (63199points) February 28th, 2016

Trying to get into my online banking and it isn’t recognizing my password. It’s asking me for a tax ID number to send me a reminder. I thought that was only for corporations. If not, where can I find it? I am frustrated.

I would call to speak with a person who can assist you. Your personal tax ID number is your Social Security number and I would never give that out to anyone without knowing directy who the requester is especially online. Have you tried rebooting your computer? That often works for me when I run across login issues.

@Cruiser I tried their customer service number but they’re not there on Sunday and also the last four digits of my SS but that wasn’t it either. I’ll call tomorrow but thought someone might know something.

Will try rebooting but I doubt that will help.

Thanks.

Are you a contractor? I am and I have an EIN. I have it in a folder but I think you can get it at the IRS website.

@Jak I’m not which is why it is confusing.

In any case, I did reboot and then tried one of the passwords I thought it might be and had tried before and this time I did get in.

So thanks.

I thought “tax id number” was the term used for either your SS# if you are an individual, or your EIN if you are a business. Online banking is for people and businesses but they don’t know which you are until you successfully log in. Like using “Ms.” rather than “Mrs.” or “Miss.”

@LuckyGuy Nope – because my access id specifies personal or business and as I said, I tried the last four numbers of my SS and they wouldn’t take that.

Does it have to be four digits? Usually the SS# is the TID for individuals and sole practioner businesses.

Your tax id # is your social security number (unless you have been issued a separate one by the government).

I’d say it’s your SS#. That’s is your tax ID.

That’s an odd thing for your bank to ask. Is it possible you were on a fake website fishing for information. How did you access the site originally?

janbb's avatar

As I said above, it wasn’t the SS last four digits because they weren’t accepting that. I think @LuckyGuy might have hit it that they didn’t know if it was a personal or commercial account but they didn’t give another option or say tax ID or last four of SS#.

@flutherother It was the right web site. They were asking for it on a “Forgot your password” request form. But I agree it was odd. Would have made more sense if they asked a security question.

Anyway, the problem was solved.

You may have inadvertently ticked the business prompts instead of the personal prompts.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Nope – checked that but maybe something triggered it.

Call the bank.

AS I SAID ABOVE, THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED.
