Did John McCain call his wife a c***?

Cliff Schecter claims in his book, The Real McCain, that during a 1992 campaign stop, “Cindy playfully twirled McCain’s hair and said, ‘You’re getting a little thin up there.’ McCain’s face reddened, and he responded, ‘At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c***.”’
Is it true? I really want to use it as an example of his sexism, but I don’t want to if it is false.
The only “response” McCain has made to the allegation I’ve seen so far was when a man asked him at a town hall and he refused to respond.
What does Fluther think?

Impossible to know if he actually said that. Only a few people know for sure.
It is an allegation and there is no video or audio file to back up this claim. I remember reading about it and there even was a minister who tried to ask McCain about it on the campaign trail but he deflected to comment.
I know that the original Schecter story mentioned other witnesses to this tale. I don’t know. He may have. He may not have. If you want to use it as an example, just mention that it is an allegation and mention Mr. Schecter.
Well, he called Asians gooks (sorry, not to offend, just for information purposes), so I think him capable of calling his wife a c***. He’s old, and from a generation that had/have certain ideas about women, as well as minorities for that matter.
Between the rape joke, the Chelsea Clinton joke, and his opinions on abortion, there is no doubt in my mind that he is sexist, but this would be the cherry on top of the ignorance.
@tinyfaery: one reason why he shouldn’t be president, he doesn’t belong to the modern world.
@trumin Rape joke? Link please.
Well, its not like I was going to vote for him anyway.
At some point in time, I’m sure he did!
I’m sure she has called him a D!<K#eAD once or twice!
F¥<K McCain!
@bulb Do you think its okay to refer to people you supposedly love in such a manner? What does he say about the other 99% of people in the world? Not an attribute I want to see in a leader.
True or not, I wouldn’t read too much into a 16-year-old story. But if you want the raw deal, here’s the raw story
Ariwriter; That’s where I found it, yeah. Because I’m not paying for a book that is probably all made up. Huffington Post cites Raw, so unless someone has actually read the passage I’m just going to assume that is what the book says…
But what do you mean “read too much into a 16-year-old story”. If he did indeed say it then it is horrible and inexcusable, and I certainly think it says something about him as a person.
If there is no proof that he said it then we may as well forget it (the reason I asked Fluther), but if there is no proof he didn’t say it and he isn’t going to officially deny it….
Anybody read a denial? That would help answer my question.
Everyone has been “insensitive” by saying something inaproprate at one time or another. Jesse Jackson called OBama a nigger “accidently”. Does this mean he hates black people. We need to get over all this name calling. I honestly would not call my wife a cunt but if he did I don’t think that makes him sexist.
Cunt, bitch, whore, slut, etc… are all meant to put a woman in her “place”, just as the n- word is meant to put blacks/AAs in their “place”. I think all people are sexist in some way or another, he is just more overt about it, and obviously unapologetic.
