Has your cell phone been ringing people on its own, and otherwise messing with you lately?

Recently I was in the car and my cell phone rang. I answered, said ‘hello’, and there was nothing. “Hello” again, and a woman says “HELLO! Did someone just call me from this number?” I answered “no, they did not” and she hung up. I had a couple of other unusual calls that day.
Today my phone rang and I didn’t know the number. I called it back, and it was a friend of mine, but she said, “I didn’t call you. I’m driving the car and my phone has been laying on the seat beside me.”
I’ve been getting an unusual number of solicitation calls.
Is this something with the solicitors hijacking people’s phones to make calls?
Anyone else experiencing this kind of thing lately?

I have heard of smart phones doing pocket dialling , the head mechanic did it to me one day, but my flip never has , but most times it’s off, yeah I am one of the few that don’t want or need my damn cell on 24/7.
I cannot speak entirely to your experience but I too have had an inordinate rise in the of “Robo/Stepford Wives Calls” that are disturbing in the least. I even called one out the other day and said…“are you a Robot”? Her/it’s replay after a pause was…“Oh…Mr Cruiser that is so funny of course I am not a robot I am a real person and only here to find out if you use Depends that I can help you get an unlimited supply if you only call 1–800-gul-lible”....
Well at least she was trying to sell you something to put her crap in. :)
This sounds like the opening paragraphs of a Stephen King novel.
These were not cases of pocket dialing, BTW, and that was the prompt for the question.
Within a week I was involved in two calls from a cell phone where the phone was clearly not in contact with anyone or any thing moving.
Apart from a shocking number of amber alerts lately, there hasn’t been much excitement.
Both my cell and line lines are deluged with calls lately from strange area codes. Half of them are “hangups” with nobody there. The others are robo calls, where the answer to the question “are you a machine?” is always followed by a pause, and then some explanation such as “I’m an actual person who must use a computer to help me make phone calls.” The first time this happened, I was fooled into feeling that perhaps the caller was disabled & the resulting guilt kept me on the line long enough to hear half a minute or so of pitch. By then I recovered, and interrupted the spiel with “How’s the weather where you are?” Again the pause (longer this time ) and “that isn’t as important as my news for you”. I wasn’t fooled a second time.
I never answer the phone if I don’t recognize the number that the call is coming from. Neverrrrr.
I’m getting an inordinate number of calls from 8** area codes, too, @stanleybmanly. I’ve answered a couple because I was dealing with a corporate office where I had to call 8** to get there.
Hang-ups.
Meaning, I guess, that they were just fishing for a line with a live body at the other end. It will probably escalate the robo calls I get. I imagine the election season has something to do with it…I’m in a state that’s not had a primary.
