Has the current American Presidential election contest made you dread reviewing the most current daily news feed?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) March 12th, 2016

A feeling of “waiting for the latest bomb to drop”?

It seems to me nearly every day brings us to a new low.
I’m losing my sense of what it means to be “American”, at least in the modern sense.

I have definitely changed my approach to the news. I am not ignoring it, but I rely more on a few generally impartial summaries.

I get a daily campaign summary from Politico. They are not in favor of anyone, and they distill the news without all the flaming instantaneous social media knee jerk reactions.

And, I check the print news. But I don’t delve much beyond headlines on most websites and I stay away from politics on twitter.

As a Canadian I look forward to whats happening in your world, it’s like watching a comedy-action-drama show all rolled into one.

Yep, pretty much ever since Trump turned the presidential debates into a platform to shill his shitty products and boast about the size of his dick.

Not really. The trick is to be so busy that you don’t fixate on the “news”. Things are so peculiar this time around, that it’s difficult to be shocked any longer. If you have a lot of spare time to dwell on the doings, you have my sympathy. Because a rational person considering the implications must balance between panic and depression. There was a time when I was suspicious of all of those platitudes touting the glories of the regimented tedium involved with paying the mortgage. Turns out that routine drudgery is a handy way to curb the imagination from journeys through depressing reality.

Yes. i don’t even listen to NPR as much as I usually do.

On one hand it kind of amuses me actually. Especially the commentaries from Trump.

But at the same time it saddens me to see politics cheapened due to Trump. It seems to me that Trump is treating is campaigning as no different to how one handles being a contestant on a reality tv show.

As an Irish person, I’m very fond of America. And it is troubling to me that Trump could win. I think he could be disastrous for you in terms of your economy and especially foreign affairs. He’s to racist to be any sort of diplomatic president.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Well, one can’t look away. If this is what people in your country are thinking and doing, shouldn’t you know it? At some point, you may even become so angry that you become politically active.

janbb's avatar

@dappled_leaves I think many of us are politically active to some extent but the 24/7ness of it is impossible to subject oneself to.

At some point I think it is natural to come to the same conclusion as John Forbes Nash, the subject of the A Beautiful Mind film:

“But after my return to the dream-like delusional hypotheses in the later 60’s I became a person of delusionally influenced thinking but of relatively moderate behavior and thus tended to avoid hospitalization and the direct attention of psychiatrists.

Thus further time passed. Then gradually I began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of thinking which had been characteristic of my orientation. This began, most recognizably, with the rejection of politically-oriented thinking as essentially a hopeless waste of intellectual effort.

@ibstubro Sad to hear you say your sense of what it means to be “American”, is dependent of the news cycle of the day. Me…I am more sad to see the messed up media try their damndest to redefine what it means to be an American to suit their cherry picked candidate while slinging mud at anyone who opposes their anointed one.. No denying it makes for great ratings.

Neo racism is alive and flourishing in America. I wont devote much time or energy to follow this train wreck of a election cycle.

ibstubro's avatar

I don’t have the 24/7 news cycle, for the most part, not having broadcast TV. I generally look at Google News pretty soon after getting on the computer in the morning. Maybe a couple of times during the day. If I’m in the car, I have NPR on, and even NPR is giving me about more coverage than I can stand. Like @janbb, I listen less than ever.

“Print” news is all I really get, @zenvelo. I try to stick to the headlines because opening a new political story it’s impossible to tell the real truth from fiction.

You’re pretty damned close, @SQUEEKY2. If the election ends up risking America’s national security, Canada is bound to have repercussions.

I didn’t see any news feed of Trump’s products, but I read a story the following day about how much of the crap doesn’t exist today @Darth_Algar. Do you think Donald knows that? Honestly?

I follow it, @dappled_leaves. It just make me more depressed. I heard something about a Cruz rally locally and I called around trying to find if there was a protest planned. Unfortunately it’s Ted’s dad, and he’s only preaching to a handful of the local choir.

A hopeless waste it is, @Lawn, but we still have to try to wrap our minds around how and why.

Well, then cheer up, @Cruiser, because that’s not what I said.

Personally, I think this is a last gasp for blatant national racism, @1TubeGuru. As long as the racists aren’t allowed to take power. Personally, my intended presidential vote has done an about-face.

The presidential contest isn’t a big thing here to the general publish. Now and then there are discussion about who is going to win. There was even a show on TV dedicated to that debate. People say it will be really bad if Trump become president, but there is a great detachment in everyone’s feeling, as if this isn’t their matter. Personally I’m a bit more concerned about Trump, and I don’t want him to win. If he win a lot of problems will arise in my country, directly and indirectly. The people living in America may get kicked out, to name a few.

As for news in general, I have been bombarded by enough negative news, many of which come from unreliable sources, to know that I need to filter what I read.

ibstubro's avatar

Is it solely because of your participation on Fluther, and the reactions of the Jellies to Trump, that you’re more nervous, @Mimishu1995?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@ibstubro I think so. I’m more attached to America than most people around me through my participation here. At least Fluther gives me enough insight about Trump to know what will affect my country.

ibstubro's avatar

I wish we all had a forum to get similar insight, @Mimishu1995.
For instance, I’d love to have a familiar forum with Germans so I could gain some insight into the vote tomorrow. I’m very curious about what’s at stake for Merkel, and her odds.
She fell from grace so quickly. I hope she can stay in the race.

@ibstubro I know in advance that highlighting that you indeed referenced how :It seems to me nearly every day brings us to a new low. I’m losing my sense of what it means to be “American”, would in no way get you to acknowledge that you actually typed what you said.

“It seems to me nearly every day brings us to a new low.
I’m losing my sense of what it means to be “American”.”

Sad to hear, @Cruiser, that you’re unable to distinguish between events and news.

Events in the American presidential election are making me lose my sense of what it means to be American. I learn of those events from the news, which makes me dread reading the current political news.

This is similar to your understanding that the liberal news media wasn’t declaring Trump the winner of a primary contest. It simply wasn’t accurate.

LostInParadise's avatar

This has to be the most uninspiring group of presidential candidates that I can recall. The more I hear about them, the less I like them. Trump and Cruz are clearly the worst of the bunch, but the rest are not anything to write home about. I will be voting for the Democratic candidate (most likely Clinton) as the lesser of two evils.

ibstubro's avatar

Replace “uninspiring” with depressing, and I agree with you entirely, @LostInParadise.

It’s bee a while since I was inspired, but this is (another) new low, IMO.
