Test 3: Can I post more than three questions in a day?

Asked by Jeruba (56106points) March 12th, 2016

Please see Test 1.

Ok, update. After this third question, I got the following message on my fourth try: “We’re sorry, but you’ve asked the maximum number of questions. Try again later.”

So how does anyone else manage to post four?

I don’t know! But I see it too…. could it have anything to do with how different time zones group the questions into days? Just a guess, I don’t know whether the days according to our different time zones or if it’s all on one time

Might be based on category..just a guess. Have you posted all in the same category?

I have got this message once.
Dont remember after how many questions.

I am hoping mods come clarify.

Another thing you could do is pm the mods and give them the name of the Jelly and the approximate times of the four posts (or at least the first of the four and the last of the four), and see if they can explain.

Perhap’s it’s a glitch. However, given how dead the site has been at times, at least they’re asking questions!

You warned them you were coming.

@Jeruba Yeah, please PM us.

In general: The limit is not “3 questions in a day”, really. Fluther will just check that the thread before the last two a user started was long enough ago. So, time zones don’t factor in.

@longgone What is “long enough ago”?

Ambiguous

Here’s how it works: When a user goes to the “Ask a Question” page, the server queries for the number of questions asked by that person within the past 12 hours. If that number is 3 (or more), then they are not allowed to post another question.

So, the catch is that “a day” is 12 hours (although I agree that is an incorrect definition). I suppose, with the correct timing, you could easily post 5 questions within a 24-hour period.

Yes I’ve been managing to get about 4–5 questions a day. I just post my first 3 questions pretty early in the morning. Sometimes I post a question on my iPhone on the way into work. Then wait between 9–12 hours and post more questions then.

What @PhiNotPi says is about right. Usually after 12 hours you get to ask more questions. But 5 questions seems to be the absolute maximum within 24 hours.

@NerdyKeith Gaming the system, huh? No sweet corn for you!

[Mod Says] To follow up on what @PhiNotPi said, the “three questions a day” rule (and the text in various places expressing that rule) is from the early days of the site. As Ben explains here, he and Andrew experimented with different rates and settled on three questions every 12 hours. It just turns out that they never updated any of the site’s rule text (and until very recently, they were the only ones who could).

Well, I ask three questions a year, so I have some catching up to do.

Jeruba's avatar

@PhiNotPi and @SavoirFaire, many thanks for the explanations. I see we were correct in remembering that the interval used to be 24 hours; I guess some of us missed noticing when it changed. It seems that Ben and Andrew didn’t think six per day were too many. So all is in order: it’s not a glitch, and no one is actually getting any special exceptions.

I did PM @longgone as requested above; and for the record, I had previously PM’d the mods via the “Contact” button, preferring a discreet inquiry as a first line of approach. I posted here experimentally only after waiting days for an answer that didn’t come. It turns out that my original query had been lost in the spam bucket.

@Jeruba “It turns out that my original query had been lost in the spam bucket.”

Next you’ll be telling us you’re a Nigerian prince!

Jeruba's avatar

Haha, @janbb. Well, that’s what a mod told me, anyway. Do you think it went to Nigeria? Maybe that’s why $150,000 has been deposited to my account.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@Jeruba Yeah, your email was lost to Google’s spam filter. We’ve been getting so much spam via the Contact button that Gmail has stopped delivering it. This is a rather recent development as far as I can tell, but it’s easily fixed for the future now that we’ve discovered the problem.
