If you worked on the 2nd floor of an office building, would you usually take the stairs or the elevator?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) March 13th, 2016

I work on the second floor. I almost always take the stairs, unless I’m carrying something heavy that might put me off balance or won’t let me have at least one hand free. I’m not the Nija girl I used to be.

The building is over 100 years old. The stairs no way, no how meet today’s code! They’re very narrow. There are a few people I regularly meet on the stairs, and one of us has to wait at the landing. Everyone else in the building seems to take the elevator.

Last week was my first week and my thighs and buttocks hurt and I’m content.

Now, if only we could move to the 5th floor, I’d really be in shape. Or dead. Or both. I’d be a dead, in shape woman.

2nd floor, stairs, by the time you waited for the damn elevator you could be in your office. haha

I’d take the stairs probably 75% of the time if the stairs and elevator were equidistant from my office. If I was much closer to one than the other it would affect it a little. If the stairs are dark and narrow with no window I might take them less often than if they had an open feeling with other people around.

Stairs unless I’m hauling something really heavy.

I used to work on the third, and I took the steps 90% of the time. I racked up my knee and had to use the elevator for about 4 months, but resumed the steps after that.

Now the office is on the first floor.

@JLeslie Why would dark, narrow stairs with no light bother you? (That exactly describes the stairs I take!)

I would usually take the stairs. It’s only one flight.

@Dutchess_III I just prefer to be in more open feeling spaces. We have lived on the third floor and fourth floor in apartment buildings and hotels, and I took the stairs 75% of the time if not more. Both places I didn’t feel vulnerable on the stairs. My reoccurring nightmares sometimes involve turning the corner on stairs and a man there ready to attack me.

Hell no. I work out in the gym or on the water. I make it a point never to break a sweat anywhere else. Takes the starch out of your shirts.

Hm. I never did but anywhere I go I use the stairs if it’s only one flight. When I was growing up, I lived in a 6 story building. Everyone took the stairs unless they had groceries or something. Even taking your time going up the steps was faster than that elevator.

@Dutchess_III Why did you write “really” a few answers up?

I’d be way more nervous to take an old elevator than to take old stairs. Regardless, if I were just on the 2nd floor I’d take the stairs. Others might not be capable of taking stairs and that’s OK. When I was sick I used to prefer elevators for anything above 3 floors.

I work on the 20th floor now and I absolutely take the elevator, lol.

The elevator isn’t old. It’s all shiny inside. The closest thing to a full length mirror I have because I don’t have one at home. So I don’t know how I look unless I take the elevator. However, it’s also distorted, like a fun house at the circus and I look like I weigh 500 pounds. So I don’t take the elevator.

Just because of chronic pain, I’d have to take the elevator on the way up. For whatever reason, going down stairs doesn’t hurt me as much, so it’d be pretty much half and half, every day.

I was just in a hotel on the 4th floor. I always rode the elevator up but took the stairs down – even with my luggage.

I’m getting stronger! I’m starting to jog just a leetle. I should be doing sit ups every time I go up. Just close the door to my office and drop, do 30. That would be about 240 a day.
