Why was Dr Robotnik's name changed to Dr Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) March 19th, 2016

When I was a kid I used to love the original animated series of Sonic the Hedgehog. Most of the animated series’ airing in the 90’s referred to the evil villain as Dr Robotnik (sometimes Dr Julian Robotnik)

Then years later they come out with this series called “Sonic X”; which is a little too like Pokemon in my view. Anyway they changed his name to Dr Eggman. Why would they do this?

Originally Dr. Eggman was his name in the Japanese versions, but in English it was Sonic’s jab of a nickname for him due to his body shape. I’m guessing Sonic’s nickname for the Doc stuck in the much later versions.

And I agree, it’s too much like Pokemon as it progressed for sure.

@Tea_Gryphon Thank you, that’s an excellent answer.

I would guess it’s so the younger audiences can ssy it and it might be difficult to pronounce Dr.Robotnik..
