Dental emergency - crown came out?

Asked by janbb (63222points) March 19th, 2016

I was just flossing and a crown came out. It’s not an implant but it does have a long pin. I put it in a jar in water and will call my dentist on Monday. Other than that, is there anything I should do? No nerve pain so far. (Of course, my tongue wants to live there now.)

Bloody hell, Jan. The day started out so good, too. I’m sorry this happened to you. No good advice, just sorry. You need @trailsillustrated, but she hasn’t been around since 10 Feb. (Wonder why?)

Well, my reaction to such a thing is to panic (after I had appropriately contained the errant crown), call everyone I know to make sure that they know that I’m dealing with this momentous event, then I try to find someone who will enthusiastically support my idea that ice cream will somehow alleviate my distress.
Did that help?

ALWAYS on a weekend! Glad you are in no pain and hope that remains the case.
My only advice is to agree with @canidmajor that ice cream will indeed alleviate any distress you may have over this matter. In my case, there would have to be syrup and sprinkles to truly alleviate the stress.

Keep us updated.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to put anything too cold or too hot in your mouth until you see a dentist. You might have a nerve close to the surface. I wouldn’t push my luck.

Oh, you’re just a cranky old crow. Let her have the ice cream! She’s a penguin! She can take the cold! :-)

If I can’t have any, nobody can!!!

Aww, Mr Crow, don’t be sad. You can have some, too. Ben and Jerry’s has “Rocky Roadkill” in raccoon and squirrel flavors now!

Ugh…so sorry., I think one of my crowns may be a little loose, it is only 3 years old. Going to get it checked. As long as there is no pain, not an emergency. just call your dentist Mon. morning. They can easily re-cement it. Teeth…teeth issues suck the bog banana! lol

Aw, Jan, why do such things always schedule themselves for the weekend? I’m not a dentist, and I don’t play one on TV, but you say you’re not in pain. If you eat soft foods tomorrow, I’m guessing you’ll be ok until Monday.

But, if you’re not ok, please get help. And, please keep those of us in the tidepool informed.

This happened to a friend of mine. Their dentist instructed them to apply denture adhesive on the crown to hold it in place until Monday.

If it’s the least bit sensitive to temperature, or you just get really tired of your tongue worrying at the uncapped tooth, you can fill the gap where the pin inserted with dental gum. I’ve used it, and liked it. Mild clove taste and covers up any sharp/roughness.

It’s ALWAYS the week ends, always. haha’
The last two ER visits I had to make were for a UTI and a kidney stone attack both on a Fri. night/Sat. morning. Murphys law. Pffft!

I would stick it back in but it’s got a little needle thing in it. No pain as yet just an effing big hole. I feel like Granny Yokum! It is a fairly new crown.

I think the advice about soft foods and not too hot or cold is good advice. Frozen hot chocolate maybe?

@janbb Just go buy a LOT of soup and yogurt and mushy stuff for the weekend. haha

Mmmmm. Cooked pudding eaten warm!

You should be able to get the dental gum/wax at any pharmacy, and it’s under $5.

If you do start to experience excessive pain or sensitivity, oil of cloves is a great topical remedy.

It’s not painful at all so I should be ok. Was supposed to meet my Ex for lunch so maybe a dental emergency is a blessing in disguise.

I have implants (which for anybody who doesn’t know, is a metal rod in your bone with a crown on top). A few months ago, the dentist noticed that the crown was a bit loose. Long story short, crown was taken out and a temp was made. That fell out after a few days and so I was in the same situation you are. A few days with just the post sticking out of the gum. I ate normally, drank normally, textures, temperatures, all just like any other time. No biggie. No panic. No change in diet.
