What is your opinion of "Beauty pageants" for toddlers?

Asked by Jak (3605points) March 20th, 2016

I was just reading that France has banned them for girls under 16, and I saw some woman complaining and stating that pageants are no worse than allowing your toddler to run down the beach in a bikini. (Paraphrasing, and now can’t find the dang post)
It seems to me that with all we know about self esteem and body issues, there would be no real need to discuss the “ethics”, but that they should just be a shameful thing of the past which we no longer condone because we now know better.
Apparently, I’m in the minority.
Anyone care to weigh in about this topic?

1. They are a scam on the parents, it is a system of charging fees and accessories and make up and photos for kids “on the circuit” with no real benefit to anyone.

2. It attracts pedophiles and puts one’s daughter on display as a commodity, not as a child.

3. Jon Benet Ramsey.

4. Honey Boo Boo

Yeah – I agree with the above. They’re pretty terrible.

They awful. Why would anyone even do that to their kid?

Stinley's avatar

I find them really shocking. So exploitative

elbanditoroso's avatar

I think it is sick exploitation.

Agree with everyone above. Shameful, shocking, exploitative, awful, terrible and attracts pedophiles.

I think it is very selfish of parents to steal a childhood for their own ends.

They repulse me, and they always have.

I mean, as I kid I liked the old Shirley Temple pictures, but after she got past the Animal Crackers and Good Ship Lollipop age, I found them eerily inappropriate. Children can be very cute. I don’t think beautiful is a worthy or positive ambition.

I’m not as negative as the people above, but I think there should be more rules governing these things. The fake hair and teeth, that’s all awful. I don’t think we are ready to ban children actors, and they are competing and on display too.

Toddler is too young for me, but 16 seems old for a minimum. Is France one of those countries where girls are basically considered sexual adults? If so I find the law a little odd.

The objection, aside from sexualization of a three year old, is about the psychological damage to the child and the whole self esteem based upon how she looks rather than who she is. This is not about fake hair, it’s about imposing a false standard based on looks and not simply being.

I think they appeal to a certain type of person who also loves scrapbooking and votes for Trump.

Like many, I’ve always wondered if six year-old Jonbenet Ramsey would be alive today (she’d be 26) if she hadn’t been paraded in front of every pedophile in the U.S. made over like a first class hooker. Who can’t make this connection? What kind of people feel the need to do this to their kids? I really think these assholes are consciously complicit in the advertising of their daughters for sex, if only to tease. There is no other explanation for it. These are some sick fucks.

“On October 24, 2014, TLC canceled the Honey Boo Boo series after four seasons after reports alleged that star June Shannon (Honey Boo Boo’s “Mama”) was romantically involved with a registered sex offender. A fifth season of new episodes remains unaired after the announcement of the cancellation.”

“The series premiere episode attained a 1.6 rating in the 18–49 demographic, attracting 2.2 million viewers. The series was one of TLC’s highest-rated shows

What a fucked up bunch of people.

@Espiritus_Corvus Jonbenet’s father now has changed his tune somewhat and doesn’t really approve of such young children being paraded around.

However, young children are victims of sexual abuse all too often anyway out in the mainstream. Jonbenet was murdered, so that’s even a step further, but people have their children all over the internet, and out in public.

Plus, I can’t help thinking about dance troops and couples who are very young. I don’t like when they are dressed in a too revealing way, and I don’t like when they do what I feel are vulgar moves, like pelvic thrusting a shaking, but even a simple salsa can be seen as sexual just from the hip swing.

Then I think of the boys and girls who are abused in churches, schools, camp, and scouts, and they aren’t in make-up and dresses on display. They are still targeted.

I think maybe we need to look at actual statistics. How often are kids who participate in the competitions attacked or targeted?

How the competition affects the kids psychological is a separate subject obviously that has been touched on.

@JLeslie If you can’t see the difference between this shit and ballet or the Scouts, you really need help.

JLeslie's avatar

^^I’m not talking about ballet. Go watch hip hop, and even tap and modern, at some recitals and competitions.

Edit: I googled this for you. There are plenty more articles and photos on the internet if you’re interested.

I think the toddler beauty pageants that disgust @Espiritus_Corvus and the dance recitals that @JLeslie refers to are basically one and the same?

Did I miss?
