If you’re in the United States you can join Toastmasters. They help people with their speaking skills a lot.

If English is not your first language, I recommend lots of time spent reading, watching/listening to videos/shows/music, and most importantly, conversation. Let the person know that you would like to improve your skills and for them to point out errors or make suggestions. Otherwise, it’s a little hard to judge what areas you need to work on when actually speaking.

Welcome to Fluther.

First-time questions can be a little off-putting, not knowing exactly what to ask, or what the responses might be like. So you’ll get a pass on this one, of course. Because you already know the answer: the only way to improve your English conversational skills is to have conversations in English. Obviously.

Preferably, you should have those conversations with native (or fluent) English speakers who will also be willing to give you knowledgeable feedback on your style – when you’re ready for that. But before then you should start by having conversations in your head and with others who are at your level. The reason for that is so that you can realize in advance where your errors will be and move to correct them so that your first-person English can be acceptable to you first of all.

Toastmasters immediately comes to mind. They have groups all over the U.S. If I’m not mistaken, they have “specialized” (for lack of a better word right now) groups you can join. If you’re near a large metropolitan area, you’re sure to find a ‘English as Second Language’ Toastmasters Group. .

Get yourself a copy of the 1952 movie “Ivanhoe” with Robert Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders and Emlyn Williams. Watch this movie every night for a month. And now, I must away… so good morrow to you!
