Yes, he apparently has had an affair with a staffer but, he is divorced, she was not on the state payroll, she was paid by his campaign staff.
Politicians, like other people, screw around. What is so serious about this?

Maybe he took trips and had her paid for by government funds.
He is a Governor in a Bible Belt state. ‘Nuf said.
There is more involved in the case than the alleged affair. It boils down to Gov. Bentley’s ethics on several facets, as well as possible misuse of funds. There is an article in The Washington Post that provides the details thus far.
The alleged affair and proof of sexual shenanigans is what broke the story. As more information comes to light, the affair is trifling compared to other actions conducted by Gov. Bentley. It’s pretty twisted.
Currently, the governor cannot be impeached. Consideration is underway regarding changing the state rules on this. Since he only has two more years in office and ethical investigations take a long time, it’s more likely that he will remain in office unless he chooses to resign.
There’s quite a backstory of financial shenanigans and some really ugly influence peddling and intertwining friends helping friends do illegal things. The WP story was pretty good.
But I think the underlying theme is that this guy portrayed himself as a godly and honest dude, and he turns out to be an unethical shit.
By the way, corrupt governors are nothing new to Alabama. The previous one is still in prison.
It reminds me of Mark Sanford from South Carolina, the one who disappeared and was found to be in Argentina with his girlfriend.
@jca – yes, he gave “hiking the Appalachian Trail” a whole new meaning.
It’s Alabama. The staffer was his sister.
Glanced through your link @Pied_Pfeffer. His wife filed for divorce after 50 years? If she did that just because he had a girlfriend, then I think she’s nuts. At the age of ~70, who cares if he has a girlfriend? If it were my husband, I wouldn’t.
@Dutchess_III – i think it’s more than the infidelity. There’s the financial legerdemain as well.
Running for my dictionary…
Ah. Yes. Now THAT would piss me off!
