What are the most commonly quoted biblical verses, Christians tend to use as an attempt to persuade others to join their faith?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) April 4th, 2016

I am specifically talking about Christians who feel the desperate need to convert others over to their camp (so to speak). I’m not intending to generalise Christians as a whole.

I’m asking this for research for a book I’m writing, as some of the characters are very religious.

Here’s an old standby:

John 14:6:Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

My church leaned heavily on the book of Acts.

“Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved” – Acts 4:12

“Then Peter said unto them: Repent, and be baptised every one of you in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you and to your children and all who are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call” – Acts 2:38–39

“Oh God, ooh you are so big, we’re all really impressed down here I can tell you”

I had a roving band of Jehovahs Witnesses once come onto my idyllic little 5 acre property and say to me ” Don’t you want to live in paradise?”
I replied, ” I already do.”
Then ‘Marwyn” the witness protection goose came around the corner and escorted them back down the driveway.

Looks like one of Gods creatures wants you off his turf too.
The Lion may lie down with the Lamb but the Goose will not lie down with the Witnesses. lol

Well, they’ve been trying to point to all of the “signs of the end times” ever since I can remember. Well, actually, they’ve been doing that since Jesus’ times. Or before.

I’ve never had a Christian try to pursued me to join their faith. I guess the ones I know work on the ‘attraction’ principle? Perhaps the Christians I know have better things to do?

I’ve been approached by aggressively campaigning Christians many times (generally in random street encounters), but I don’t remember any of them quoting a particular verse. Which makes sense, since if I need to be converted, a Bible citation isn’t likely to carry a lot of authority.

They generally ask if I’m saved, or if I know I’m going to heaven, or if I’ve accepted Jesus Christ as my saviour. And if I say anything that gives them doubt, then they often act condescending and pitying and like they are desperately concerned for me.

Some of them have handed me pamphlets which do refer to some Bible passages, though.

Austin 3:16. I hear that one referred to a lot.

John 3:16 – because Big, Bad, omniscient All Powerful Sky Daddy, who could have zapped our planet out of existence with a finger snap, could find no other way to get a handle on his disobedient creatures, than sending his Son down here to be mutilated and tortured by a bunch of sadistic cretins. Yeah, makes perfect sense.

The funny thing about people trying to convert you is when they quote something from the Bible about how you’re going to hell, they gasp when you shrug your shoulders. I think they literally can not believe that you actually, truly don’t believe in God, or hell.

Personally, I have always cringed at the whole this life doesn’t matter it’s the after life that counts, bullshit. One fucking life is enough let alone another one that lasts for eternity. The stuff of horror movies for sure. LOL

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yeah. They can be assholes in this life.

I just hope reincarnation isn’t true. I can do without sitting on a cloud with Jesus groupies singing Hosannas unto the Lord for eternity, and Hell might have good company but no A/C. But I guess I’d settle for either of those, before having to be born into this fucking veil of woes again. Childhood, puberty, adolescence, old age, all over again? No thanks, I’ll pass.

^ Yeah, and I have no desire to be re-united with anyone in the afterlife that I got rid of in this life. LOL

Amen, Sister Coloma, can we get a hallelujah! Well, some people, others I would like to be reunited with. Whether or not they have the same view towards me, meh…
