Could you recommend a pop / rock song that promotes individuality?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) April 7th, 2016

So far my favorite pro individuality songs are mostly songs by The Offspring. Such as Dammit I Changed Again, Smash and The Meaning of Life

@SecondHandStoke What a great song title. I will listen to this when I am at a desktop computer. Thanks for sharing.

Get drunk first.

Then put on your leather jacket, a kilt over your ripped jeans and boots.

Not pop/rock, but I couldn’t resist sharing it.
The Humpty Dance

There’s a very relevant song I want to link but I hate the person (and song) so much that I am refraining from doing so. If you prod, I will share.

Jordan Smith has made a specialty of singing songs supportive of individuality. The first single released from his first album fits your criteria. It’s called Stand in the Light.

Skinny Puppy’s album Mind, The Perpetual Intercourse states on the back:

“For those who make up their own minds.”

Fun To Be Had by Nitzer Ebb says “What you say should be from your own mind.”

Can’t say that I can really. Rock/pop music is all about conformity disguised as individuality. Pre-packaged social rebellion*.

(*And you can pick up your rebel uniform at Hot Topic – conveniently located in a shopping mall near you.)

^ Fuck Hot Topic. Some of us held our clothes together with safety pins and duct tape because we couldn’t afford regular clothes, much less $50 for pre-destroyed pants.

@Seek Well we don’t have a hot topic in Ireland. I know they have an online store, but I usually use Zazzle (same service that sells the Fluther merch)

Anyway to address what @Darth_Algar was saying. I can totally see where you are coming from in terms of very over commercialized music. But I am talking about pop and rock as two separate genres. Depending in the artist I think there are still quite a few modern rock bands that are non conformist.

But then again you will get typical commercials mainstreame acts doing a one off song with an important message. And if one gets something out of that one song, I don’t see the harm.

I’m going to go with Rebel Rebel by David Bowie.
