What are some analytical points in the movie Blue Velvet by David Lynch?

Asked by dopeguru (1928points) April 7th, 2016

I just saw this film and my mind is a complete empty space.

What on earth is going on here? What are some interesting metaphors or points to point out or take in? Really though.

I saw this a long time ago and found it very hard to watch. Did you?

Why don’t you start by saying something about the imagery, and never mind what it stands for. Just what did you see? And what did you see recurring?

If this is a class assignment, it’s best if you come up with your own points of analysis, but people here can give you helpful feedback on them.

I couldn’t watch it – I quit about ⅓ in. It was too disturbing.

Force yourself to sit through Eraserhead. Then get back with me.

I went to a performance art play by a friend of mine. After watching it, I told him about several parts that I felt were very deep, and he told me they were just cool things to do.
I suspect that is what Lynch does.

My ex loved this movie and got me to watch it. He thought yelling ‘Surrender Dorothy’ was somehow clever and profound. I think he must have been too stoned on something. (Both my ex and Lynch) People who are too stoned say and do weird, out-of-left-field stuff and somehow think they are being clever or deep and to us sober people, simply look childish, sickening, uncreative and very boring.

Well, it stars my One True Husband, Kyle MacLachlan

So there’s that.

Honestly you either enjoy David Lynch or you don’t. He’s like cilantro, or patchouli.

I mean damn, what’s not to love?

(Sigh) this has been posted in general so I will help you with your homework:

Lynch often explores the duality of one’s personality. This is seen in his Mulholland Drive. In Lost Highway the antagonist even changes completely.

I would say that exposing and breaking up the viewer’s own expectations and mindsets is a theme and goal. If you’re uncomfortable watching it, it’s probably working.
