How fast are you?

Asked by longgone (19764points) April 12th, 2016

I just noticed that I’m becoming faster in my daily life. I rush around the house picking things up, I make dinner as if I’m starving even when I’m not, I take quick baths, and I walk faster when I’m going to the store or catching a train.

Now that I’ve noticed, I’m going to consciously slow down – I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago, and it didn’t do me any good. I don’t think the point of life should be trying to get through the day as fast as possible.

I’m curious. How fast are you, compared to others around you, or yourself at an earlier time? Does your speed feel good, or overwhelming?

I spent decades living in overdrive. It wasn’t a bad thing, it was my nature and I was happy like that. Then I got very sick, got treated, got better, but never went back to the pace, and I’m happy with that, too. I live a slower and slower pace, I do different things, now, slower things. I take my time. In another few years I will be sloth-like in my demeanor and that’s fine, too.

I’m fast at cooking a meal.

I can be fast at running errands if I need to be. I’m sure to plot out my stops in my head and decide the best route so it’s fast and gas efficient.

I’m slow starting off in the morning. I don’t take a shower first thing. I watch some TV. I eat. If I woke up unsually early, I might go back to sleep after eating.

If you hire me to do a job I’m fast. Whatever you are paying me per hour, if you paid someone else less, you probably still come out ahead paying me more.

I’m fast at cleaning my own house. I don’t worry about things being perfect. I figure if I missed a spot mopping the floor this time, I’ll get it next time.

Extremely slow and extremely fast. When I’m slow I’m a turtle, and when I’m fast I’m lighting. There’s no middle ground.

Things I do fast: walk, talk, type, drink, read, reach deadline, react in unexpected events…

Things I do slowly: run, write, eat, get up in the morning, choose something from a lot of options, react in quiz games…

I used to be precisely like @canidmajor was at one time. I had all the accoutrements of modern life to support: a house, two cars, a boat, a great job—everything but kids—and it was work to fit in kayaking, sailing, biking, camping, diving and trips to the gym, or “all the things that make life worth living.” I developed a schedule, a routine, so I could fit it all in. It was work; even the recreation part felt like work. If I missed a Wednesday at the gym, it was a failure on my part. If I blew off a bike tour, I was being a lazy lout and not taking good advantage of my playtime.

Now, I have a great job that is not very demanding and doesn’t pay nearly as well, but I can do most of my favorite things naturally, without having to find a way to cram them into my schedule. If I don’t do something or don’t get something done, so be it. Life is more like play now.

But I don’t think I could have got here without doing it the other way first.

Fairly quick, but easily distracted. I start out going like gangbusters and oooh – a squirrel! and then have to backtrack to get done what I had originally started.
Of late I have been trying to slow down and stay on task.

I don’t know how to slow down. I’m trying to learn.

I drive fast. I walk fast but I’m tall so that’s part of it. I type fast. Other than that, I don’t think I speed through life any more than any other single mother who is out of the house 10 hours per day, which means for a lot of things, speeding through life is necessary.

I walk quickly and find I am constantly overtaking others in the street even if there is no reason for me to hurry. I take it easier when cycling and I never hurry when driving.

Depends on what I’m doing. Generally I’m just fast. I don’t understand why it takes Rick so long to get out of the damn car! I’ll be out and waiting at the door….

My old boss, in her late 60’s, hated the fact I was so fast on the computer. She couldn’t follow me (hot keys rock!) and made her uncomfortable. She wrote me up for “going too fast.”

There’s pretty much nothing I’m fast at. I’ve learned to avoid getting myself into situations where speed matters. But if you want thorough and meticulous, I’m your guy.

I’m faster than anyone.

That’s why I couldn’t stay in the porn industry :(

Thanks, all.

Today, I set out rushing to my Yoga and Meditation class. I realized the ridiculousness of that, though!
