Could you draw a common object?

Asked by DoNotKnowMuch (2984points) April 15th, 2016

Inspired by this, I tried drawing a bike from memory and was appalled.

Without viewing a photo of a bicycle (or other common object), would you be willing to share a quick sketch with us? It’s easy if you use this. Once you are done, click the share icon (the people), click “share image”, copy the URL and include it in your response.

Bonus for you fine art lovers: here’s me falling off a ladder.

My high school art teacher had us draw a toilet, with similar hilarious results.
I tried to draw one but couldn’t immediately see a way to save it, and I’m already at wit’s end today so I gave up instead of punching a hole in my new monitor.

For some reason, it didn’t work to format the link in Textile

^ wow. That is amazing! Strange question – do you find that your extensive meditation practice has helped you see better? And do you think this may help you resist drawing cliche mental models of things?

@DoNotKnowMuch Nah, it’s more the many years I’ve spent doing design and such.

That’s right, this doesn’t seem to work when using the link thing. Oh well. Here is my very common object.

Oh and now I realize I had more space to draw. But hey otherwise this site is cool. I could waste so much time on that.

I’ve had to do this a number of times, draw a familiar object that I was asking someone to locate in my absence. Usually I come pretty close but miss something important, such as the height-to-width ratio or the placement of a handle. I may also assign to an item a detail that actually belongs to some other item, such as a color or design. Even when we store and retrieve things visually and with an art-trained eye, some of us still simply don’t look well enough.

I remember reading years ago about an interviewer who routinely asked job candidates to draw a bicycle. As I recall the story (which may be apocryphal), it was a good test of a lot of things, including logic and powers of observation. I don’t think this was just for engineering candidates, either.

In my last, very high-tech workplace, it would also have been a good way to see how someone handles having weird requests come at them off the wall without any notice, which was a feature of that environment.

I drew a toilet and a bike. I’m actually impressed with myself because they are recognisable. Far from great like @thorninmud but I’m happy with them!

@Mimishu1995 it was there yesterday. Flushed away into the sewers of the Internet! Never mind, it was worse than my bicycle lol
