Not only did it never happen, but the Jews were never in Egypt as slaves and Moses never existed. The whole story is made up. Probably propaganda. (And I write this as we are making plans for our Passover seder)

The Discovery Channel did some work on this a few years ago -

Now, was this as described in the Bible? Nobody knows. But apparently the physics are there.

Possible explanation I heard when I was a kid was a large earthquake that created a tsunami in that area.

Either that or a very low tide one day. Passover takes place at the Full Moon so an extreme tide is possible.

No scientific explanation.

Wyatt Archaeological Research has done the best scientific analysis of artifacts found at the site of the Red Sea crossing in a series of articles and research from 1978 to 2014. I have attended seminars and find them rather convincing. But there is no natural phenomenon which would have accounted for this.

As I read some of the responses, I am surprised to see how easily some have bought into the theories that major Bible events were fabricated. Often times these claims of fabrication are based on the prejudices and lack of information on those who make such claims. In reality, Egyptians in the inter-testamental period (from about 2,400 years ago to the times of Christ) had no trouble believing in the Exodus story, from which Egypt never recovered.

Tides combined with a knowledge of the area.

@Yellowdog Note that @elbanditoroso, @rojo, and myself have given links explaining how the parting could have happened in accordance with our current understanding of the laws of nature. So there is a scientific explanation of how such an event could have occurred.
