Have you seen the re-branding of Pepsi's Sierra Mist as "Mist Twist" in your area yet?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) April 18th, 2016

From the out set I thought Sierra Mist was a poor name for a product. Especially in that it replaced the “Slice” brand, that I liked (both product and name).

I see that locally Sierra Mist is becoming “Mist Twist” with a new color scheme (featuring a lot of ugly black) and at least one new flavor – Cherry Limeade.

Is this a national roll-out, or local market? Have you seen any other new flavors.

Slice had an apple flavor I really liked, as well as cherry-limeade.

No, but I sampled the new 1893 Pepsi just yesterday. Awful! I’ve never liked Pepsi in any of its forms. I’m strictly a Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola man.

jca's avatar

I don’t usually buy soda, but when I do, I go right to what I want and don’t usually look at anything else. I usually go for Diet Coke or Caffeine Free Diet Coke, or Coke Zero (Caffeine Free Version). Usually if I’m buying soda, it’s diet. Second choice is Diet Pepsi or Diet Ginger Ale (anything caffeine free diet is preferable). Next time I’m in store, I’ll try to remember to check for Mist Twist.

ragingloli's avatar

Did you know that “Mist” is the German word for “Dung”?

Coloma's avatar

No. Of course I live in the Sierras so that wouldn’t fly around here methinks. haha

I’m in Michigan and I just noticed it last week. I hope it tastes the same and still uses sugar rather than HFCS.

This is what I normally drink, but I dilute it half and half with water or its way too sweet. Because i regularly take Ibuprofen, I’ve had to eliminate Cola drinks altogether becaus of the caustic reaction, so the lemon lime version is what I drink.

I forget the name of Cokes version of it but it has a chemical taste and uses HFCS so I hope Pepsi changed nothing other rhan the name and label color. They usually change the label design and color every few years anyway. Hopefully that’s all. I don’t care about the name as long as the taste is the same.

I saw it about a week ago here in Tampa.

If any unusual flavors pop up, let me know!

I’m glad that it’s a complete change. I always thought Sierra Mist was such a hokey (Mountain Dew…get it?) name. I really liked the Slice products.

Oh, and @Buttonstc, Sprite is Coke’s lemon-lime soda.

Buttonstc's avatar

Yeah. Sprite, That’s it. I had a temporary brain fart :)

And I have no idea why Pepsi changed the name from Slice. I thought that was fine. It took me the longest time to get used to calling it Sierra Mist and now another name change. Oy !! Are they thinking that more people might buy it if the name is different ?

ibstubro's avatar

No doubt some marketing genius thinks he’s going to make a name for himself by re-naming the lemon-lime flavored soda. It is sort of wide open in that there’s no Pepsi product synonymous with lemon-lime like Sprite. Slice might have been too much like Sprite, and Sierra Mist was just a stupid take on Dew. Now they have Dew and Mist. Do you suppose Fresca is popular enough to spawn “Fog”? lol

Seek's avatar

Sierra Mist (or whatever) suffers from being too sugary and not citrus-y enough. Fresca is unlikely to take off, due to Aspartame being the sweetener. I, personally, love it, but I know many people who won’t go near the stuff.

JLeslie's avatar

I’m pretty sure I just saw Sierra Mist still at my supermarket. I bought Squirt instead.

Buttonstc's avatar

@Seek

You’re right about way too sugary, hence my cutting it with water.

If you like real citrusy (almost too much) You should give Sangrita Blast a try if they bring it back this summer.

It was a new “limited time” offering by Mountain Dew last summer. It was apparently developed by Taco Bell and is still available as a fountain drink there.

I was unaware of it since I don’t really eat at TB but they had displays in Kroger so I figured I’d give one of the 20 Oz. bottles a try and found I really loved it even tho I don’t like any of the other MD flavors. I’m not overly fond of the deep dark red color but the flavor is incredible.

It’s very tart and citrusy and unlike anything else on the market.

Since it was only temporary and starting to be hard to find on shelves, I talked to the manager at Kroger and put in a couple of specia orders for ten cases (of 12 cans each) to last me through the winter. Even tho I normally hate buying soda in cans, that’s how good this stuff is that I was willing to do that. Hopefully they’ll have it in 2 litre bottles next time too.

So, if you prefer citrusy, head on over to Taco Bell and give it a try. (I’m pretty sure it’s name is a take off on the drink, Sangria, which normally has lots of citrus added to red wine.)

Anyhow, I’ve got my fingers crossed for it to return this summer like they did with Baja Blast, the previous year’s temporary flavor (which tastes like used dishwater)

I’ve still got enough cases stored to last me until summer even tho I’ve been a averaging one can per day.

But be warned, even tho it’s really really tart, it’s also sugary. Not as much as most sodas but enough for me to dilute it with water. And I’m suspecting that Taco Bell might have a more sugary version still, since most fast food places have more sugary versions in their fountain drinks than their counterparts in bottles or cans; not sure why.

Anyhow, if you decide to give it a try, I’d be interested to know what you think.

ibstubro's avatar

Yes, @JLeslie most places either have Sierra Mist still, or are transitioning to to Mist Twist. The 2 liter bottles are changing here, first.
Oddly, I saw Mist Twist Cherry Limeade cans in a tiny town 20–30 minutes from where I live. I think they’re serviced by a different Pepsi distributor.

I’ve always thought Sierra Mist wasn’t citrusy enough, @Seek. I thought the previous incarnation (Slice) was much better tasting. I’ve not tried Mist Twist. I’ll look to see if the formula has changed, later.
Fresca is a personal fave of mine, but I was joking about Pepsi naming another pop after precipitation.

jca's avatar

I like Fresca myself. It’s refreshing with the sour/sweet taste.

JLeslie's avatar

I like Fresca too. It’s more grapefruity. If you haven’t tried Squirt I recommend it.

ibstubro's avatar

Yes, I drink Squirt, but I prefer Fresca, @JLeslie. I think it has a little more ‘bite’. I like the traditional the best, but I’ve tried the other Fresca flavors (if they still make them).

jca's avatar

I wonder if “Squirt” is a Southern thing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in the stores here.

JLeslie's avatar

The first time I had Squirt was in Mexico.

ibstubro's avatar

It’s been around for ages. Invented in Arizona.
When I was a kid, gin and Squirt was a popular drink.

Buttonstc's avatar

I know I’m probably sounding like I was hired to do PR for Mountain Dew, but thats honestly not the case :)

If you really enjoy citrusy, definitely stop by Taco Bell and try Sangrita Blast (or wait till it hits shelves again in a few months) That was the chief complaint expressed by those who didn’t like it, that it was too strongly citrus.

So, if citrus is what you like, there it is.

ibstubro's avatar

Can I soak a potato in it, or something, to absorb the caffeine? @Buttonstc

JLeslie's avatar

Mountain few is full of caffeine. Fresca, Squirt, Sprite, Sierra Mist, all are caffeine free. People who love Mountain Dew, and drink it daily, partly love it because they are addicted, whether they realize it or not.

Buttonstc's avatar

Ahh. Touche, you are both correct. I’d forgotten about the caffeine. For myself, it’s not a problem because I drink far more Mist than anything else.

I usually only have one can of the Sangrita spread throughout the day so I’m not really getting hit with the caffeine all at once.

But if someone is sensitive to caffeine, I can see where that would be problematic.

Seek's avatar

Mountain dew has a little over half the caffeine of an equal amount of coffee. No biggie.

jca's avatar

@ibstubro: I’m sure it has been around but as you probably know, some products (for example Soda like Mr. Pibb) are sold in the South. When I was about 10 and went to Florida for the first time, we encountered Mr. Pibb which tastes just like Dr. Pepper. They didn’t have Dr. Pepper. Not sure if they do now but then, it was Mr. Pibb in the South, Dr. Pepper in the North.

If Mountain Dew has half the caffeine of coffee, and someone drinks a 16 oz glass of it, that’s like the caffeine in a cup of coffee. That would fuck me up if I drank it late in the day and had to go to work the next day.

JLeslie's avatar

Most people who drink caffeine daily, whether it be a cup of coffee or a 16 oz soda, if they don’t have it one day they’ll feel pretty crappy. At minimum just not “feel themselves” at max get a headache and feel very sleepy.

Mountain Dew, if I remember correctly has more caffeine than sodas like Coke and Pepsi.

ibstubro's avatar

Yeah, @jca I was raised in Missouri, which is a border state, so both north and south products were frequently available. We primarily shopped at Kroger, which was Southern based, but other groceries were available. Kroger carried Southern products into our predominantly Northern region.

The main soda pop of my youth was RC Cola, in that my grandmother bought us all the RC Cola we could drink. It’s not even a player around here, now.

I don’t drink caffeine after noon, either. Coffee, tea, pop – none of it.

There’s a Southern based pop that looks just like Squirt, but has caffeine in it! The name escapes me at the moment.

Seek's avatar

Mello Yello?

ibstubro's avatar

No, that’s a Pepsi product, @Seek.
Give me a minute…

ibstubro's avatar

Sun-Drop!

Also currently produced by Dr. Pepper/Snapple, as is Squirt.
I only encountered Sun-Drop a few years ago and I was excited about it until I found out it had caffeine in it. Dr. Pepper is my only caffeinated beverage.

I think it’s sort of a Mt. Dew/Squirt cross.

jca's avatar

I wish more restaurants offered caffeine-free diet soda. Panera has it (Diet Caffeine-free Pepsi).

JLeslie's avatar

@jca What is completely impossible is to find caffeine free regular soda in a restaurant. Probably the touch screen soda machines in some newer fast foods have it, but 99% of places don’t.

Caffeine free tea is always some fruity or spicy blech, instead of just regular tea with no caffeine. It’s so frustrating.

Seek's avatar

That’s because you can’t remove all the caffeine from tea. Decaffeinated tea still has 5–10 milligrams of caffeine per serving. They cannot call it “Caffeine free”

jca's avatar

Yeah but you can purchase “decaffeinated tea” that’s regular tea (regular like what’s had with milk by many people) and surely that (or a powdered form) could be made into an iced tea, too.

ibstubro's avatar

I drink lemonade when I eat out, more often than not, @jca. It’s not diet, but there’s no caffeine and I figure the carbonation isn’t good for me. It’s rare that I can get diet pop without caffeine even at a quick.

Around here, @JLeslie nearly every restaurant offers a ‘white’ soda – either Sierra Mist or Sprite. But never in diet.

FYI: Kroger used to offer a decaffeinated diet sweet tea in 12-pack cans that I liked a lot. It was too sweet tasting to drink straight, but great over ice. I no longer have Kroger, and forget to check when I’m near one.
Oddly, it was also chuck full of vitamin C. They claimed it had something to do with the decaffeination process.

JLeslie's avatar

@ibstubro Right, white sodas, but never caffeine free dark sodas.

@Seek A mini amount of caffeine is fine, decaf coffee has caffeine, but all restaurants have that. Restaurants often do have decaf tea bags for hot tea, but it’s usually not regular black tea tasting teas. Even at Starbucks you can’t get it.

ibstubro's avatar

Oh, gotcha, @JLeslie. I don’t like caffeine free dark sodas. Well, I don’t like dark soda much, but for Dr. Pepper.

I see somebody is saying Mist is the German word for Dung… They don’t know what the hell they are talking about. Mist is “Nebel” in German and dung is or shit is Scheisse. There’s always somebody who’s got to try and cut up my heritage and it ticks me off. Sierra Mist was always a great soda when it had sugar in it, NOT HFCS. I even enjoyed Sierra Mist when it had the stevia in it but it did leave that “diet soda” after taste, especially when it was in a plastic bottle., Purified Stevia tastes awful with lemon in plastic, but the soda was great with no HFCS and NO STEVIA whatsoever. Change it back Pepsi, you’ve made a lot of enemies.. Or even better, start with the original logo of Sierra Mist, change it back with only sugar and we will all be happy. Then make sierra mist natural too and you’ll have all 3. I’d be happier having a choice than none. Pepsi is awful, and sierra mist is the only soda I would drink. Now I will move to Sprite Zero if I have to just to boycott Pepsi if you don’t bring it back.

ragingloli's avatar

@angry_without_sierra_mist
I think I know my language well enough, thank you.

ibstubro's avatar

I like Sprite Zero better, @angry_without_sierra_mist.

I wish they’d bring back Slice, and all the attendant flavors, especially Apple.
