What's your best estimate?

Asked by Earthbound_Misfit (13177points) April 19th, 2016

Fun question.

Three building contractors.

1×6-meter by 3-meter kit-form garden shed.

In total, how many hours do you estimate it will take to put the shed up?

Heehee, you put erection ;-}

If they charge by the hour, they’ll take as long as they bloody want ££££££

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I did :D I did it on purpose.

So how many hours do you think they’ll take? Go on… have a guess.

ucme's avatar

I really have no idea, you see, we have sta…well, you know

jca's avatar

Here, a decently made pre-fab shed the size you are talking is between 1 and 2 thousand. That is without the erection. In the store, 1 or 2k.

jca's avatar

I’d say 3 guys shouldn’t take more than half a day. Maybe early in the day to early afternoon at most.

You have to figure in trips for beer, sandwiches, tools, other tools they forgot or thought they had, arguments over directions after several failed attempts, naps, more beer, pizza, phone calls to friends, arguments that came to blows, male bonding… I’d estimate a couple weeks.

jca's avatar

Hahaha @Jak. Plus adding in texting to girlfriends, texting to girls they just slept with who are wondering why they haven’t called, texting to friends about what they’re doing tonight, cigarette breaks.

jca's avatar

Also texting to wives about why they haven’t been home in three days. Hahaha.

Are the workers union or not?

rojo's avatar

On a slab?

8 hour day if they have the tools and equipment. Less if they are familiar with the process.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

No idea if they’re members of a union.

Yes, it’s on a slab. The slab is already there.

This is one of those questions that amounts to guessing the number of jellybeans in a jar. There is a reasonable guess as to the maximum and minimum times. But the estimates of the skills and motivations of the 3 individuals is as variable as the 7 billion people on the planet.

If the erection lasts longer than 4 hours, call a doctor.

So this shed is about 3 feet wide, 18 feet long, 9 feet high?? (For us Americans who don’t do metrics.) And there’s 3 guys working on it or bids from 3 different guys to do it by themselves alone? Metal roofing or three-tab asphalt shingles? Floor included in kit or pre-poured concrete?

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Hi kritiper

More like 20×10 ft. The new, kit-form shed is erected by 3 construction workers, who have the instruction information, and it’s to be situated on an existing concrete slab.

@stanleybmanly, not really a jelly beans in a jar situation. Anyone here who has erected a shed or has had a shed erected should be able to estimate how long it might ‘reasonably’ take.

Once a few people have made guesses, I should be able to tell you how long it actually took.

ucme's avatar

Okay, I asked the gardener Frobisher & he suggested 3–5 hrs working through coffee breaks.
He did however stress that the 3 builders know their arse from their elbow :D

kritiper's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit 10’X20’ X 3’ tall?? And these guys have built these kits before? What about the roofing?

kritiper's avatar

!2 to 16 hours, depending on what type of roofing, three guys who have done these kits before. I’m assuming your initial measurements were actually 10m X 6m X 9m or 30’ X 20’ X 10’

Jak's avatar

The roof. The roof. the roof is on fire! Sorry. Just having some fun.

kritiper's avatar

The roof makes a big difference it time since three-tab shingles take more time to install than metal roofs.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I’m not sure how tall it is. It’s 20ft long x 10ft wide x 6ft high (I just asked my husband). It has a metal roof.

kritiper's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit OK, 200 sq. ft. of floor space, about the same for the roof. 12 hours, my guess.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Well… so far (because after inspection of the finished job, my husband discovered part of the roof is held on by one screw and other parts have barely been screwed down), it has taken them 43 hours.

Thankfully we are not paying for this work. It’s an insurance job. The man who was contracted subbied the work to other contractors and they have so far taken 43 hours to erect the Taj MaShed. So, mostly as a bit of fun, I wondered how long people would estimate it should take to erect such a building. It replaces a secondhand shed that was destroyed during a storm. My husband and son put the previous shed up in just over a day – and it was a secondhand job, with no instructions and missing screws etc.

My husband has advised the person who is paying them for the work they’ve done. They are ripping the poor guy off. Had we been paying, after the first day’s inactivity, I’d have taken a fold-up chair out there and sat on it doing my work so I could keep an eye on them.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Thank you everyone for playing along. The Taj MaShed is an erection and a half – obviously!

jca's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit: Did your hubby tell the guy paying that the contractors did shoddy work? I know that’s not the question here but I’m just curious.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Oh yes! They (or someone) is going to have to come back and fix it. Otherwise, the next big wind or storm we get through here is likely to see us with a roofless shed. What annoys me is that even though the money is not directly coming out of our pockets, we all end up paying more for insurance when people rip the system off like this. The guy who was contracted is likely to increase his quote to the insurance company next time he has a job like this and there is no justification for how long it took the contractors to put the shed up.

rojo's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit Just for a comparison, I put up an 8’ x 10’ x 6’ metal shed in a little over three hours by myself. And that included putting in all the screws and drilling and installing expansion bolts to hold it to the slab. Admittedly, not nearly as large but I had to handle the metal panels without assistance. It would have been so much easier with another pair of hands

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I’m just thankful my husband was dealing with the bludgers. Everytime I looked out of the kitchen window, they appeared to be sitting on their arses. I’m not always diplomatic. If I’d had to pay them I couldn’t have held my tongue.
