Why would the time stamp on the bill from an eatery be 40minutes ahead, regularly?

Asked by flo (13313points) April 26th, 2016

I mean if it’s not some kind of a glithch with the time stamp… if it’s been constant for years or something like that? So, what would the purpose be? Is this supposed to be common knowledge?

They don’t know how to reset it.

JLeslie's avatar

The time was set up wrong and they don’t care.

Mariah's avatar

Their computer clock is set wrong.

Some glitches do go uncorrected for years. Maybe nobody knows how to change it, maybe they’re too lazy to change it, or maybe they jsut don’t care. In any case, it’s possible for a mistake to persist for years.

Possibly the computer crashes daily and the owner is in a hurry to get it up agin, and thus forgets or does not want to update the time every time?
Curious as the computer software would had updated it?

I’m curious..is what supposed to be common knowledge?

flo's avatar

To answer everyone except @Dutchess_III. It’s a major plus multinational fast food restaurant chain. So, I can’t imagine it that it was set up wrong by mistake at the beginning in the first place. It can’t be they that they don’t care too lazy or they don’t have the wherewithall to correct it. So what is the purpose of having it that way?

@Dutchess_III Is the fact that the time stamp on a bill of a business has been 40 minutes or so ahead.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Either not realizing it or not caring both make more sense than some conspiracy theory. Why don’t you just just call the restaurant and ask them?

flo's avatar

@Dutchess_III Is it common knowledge? Did you know already that there is such a thing?
What would the possibility be for why?
Whether it’s called conspiracy or not is a different topic. Not everything done on purpose qualifies as conspiracy.
Do you want me to be the only one to be informed about it?

zenvelo's avatar

@flo Just because it is ”...a major plus multinational fast food restaurant chain” does not mean that a local restaurant is tied into the corporate structure. Odds are very good that you are visiting a franchise which is affiliated with the chain, but the restaurant itself is owned by someone local to your area.

For instance, the Jack in the Box in my town is part of the chain, yet the owner has just the one franchise.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Do I know that there is such a thing as what, @flo? Mistakes?

Why don’t you call the restaurant and ask them?

flo's avatar

@zenvelo The bill my guess is, except for the address would be the same exact way no matter which franchisee you go to. I can see the decor being different from franchisee to franchisee, for example, but not the bill.

Mariah's avatar

No there is probably a computer at this particular location that is set wrong. Nothing more.

zenvelo's avatar

@flo but the bill is from that location, not from corporate headquarters.

flo's avatar

@Mariah
(@zenvelo “the bill is from that location…”, Which is why the address would have to be different, oherwise everything would have to be the same since they have to be using the same software.)
What if it happens to be the bill from all the franchisees that’s ahead by the same period of time?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Call them and ask!!

flo's avatar

Someone else has seen something like that from another chain restaurant.

@Inspired_2write Curious as the computer software would had updated it? That’s what I’m thinking too. Anything like the time is not a matter of opinion, right? So, shouldn’t the flaw be detected and corrected like the auto correct/spellcheck feature?

Dutchess_III's avatar

No. Not necessarily. You can force your computer clock to the wrong time if you wanted.

So did you call them? What did they say?

JLeslie's avatar

They just set the clock for the computer system obviously. Its set wrong so it’s wrong.

It doesn’t add up to me they set it wrong by error, that they’re incompetent. If they are not incompetent then it’s on purpose. So what’s the purpose? Someone who works there might bump into this OP and answer it.

flo's avatar

All the posts from @Tropical_Willie gone. Thery were good for comic relief.

flo's avatar

…But how did that happen? I only flagged the last one as Unhelpful.

flo's avatar

@Dutchess_III Nothing to keep you from calling them to ask them right? You seem to be interested in the answer too.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, there is one thing stopping me from calling and that is I have no idea what the name of the restaurant is or where it is located. I don’t even know what state it’s in…or is it even in the U.S.? But sure, I’ll call them. PM me with the information if you don’t want to post it here.

Mariah's avatar

You don’t have to be totally incompetent to get a wrong time set on your computer. They can be running a restaurant competently but not know much about working a computer.

flo's avatar

@Mariah Even small comapnies have IT people for that purpose never mind an international chain. And not for a day but for a year or more? Next time you go to one of those look at the time.

@Dutchess_III and every one else, Think major American, international, fast food. Whichever one you go to look at it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

McDonalds. ?

Mariah's avatar

I don’t think an individual restaurant location would have a full-time IT guy, and they probably wouldn’t call one for something as minor as a wrong computer clock.

JLeslie's avatar

McDonald’s can be either a franchise or a corporate restaurant. A franchisee might own just 2 or 3 locations. I don’t know if they tie into the corporate computer system?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I know all of that. But @flo said I could call them and gave me the hint, “Think major American, international, fast food. Whichever one you go to look at it,” so I’m trying to figure out who “they” are. I guess she’s saying that every resturaunt in the same franchise has the same time stamp discrepancy.

Some help guys? @flo? Can you pin point it for me? Take it to PM if you want.

JLeslie's avatar

She certainly could call if she wants to bother.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I suggested that to her at least 3 times. @flo what’s stopping you from calling?
