Has the term changed at all over the years?
Please state what country/state you live in, if you don’t mind.

At the school where my grandsons go, they have a special way their raise their hand. They don’t say anything. Talking in class is discouraged, unless it is Q and A time.
I put up three fingers. The three middle fingers. Index, middle ad the next finger to the middle finger..
@zenzen I don’t know. It was only 2 years with a crazy teacher. Later we had to ask in French. Je ne swui pa a la twollet sil yu ple.
I’m pretty sure you just called me a chicken troll.
It is French for “may I use the toilet please.”
I can’t remember back that far.
I got all excited to see you zenzen pop up in my questions. It’s been a long time. My niece and nephew aren’t little, but they are much younger than me and they say bathroom. I assume they asked to go to the bathroom when they were in school and needed to go.
USA.
My daughter says bathroom or restroom.
Illinois
My daughter and I both say “bathroom.” We live in NY, USA.
I attended school in New York City and Florida.
Every teacher had a different method. One had us ask in sign language. Another simply left the “bathroom pass” up on the chalkboard, and we were encouraged to simply walk up and take the pass and go, interrupting the class as little as possible. Usually the word “restroom” was used, though kids always came up with their own silly phrases, like kids do. “Can I skip to the loo, Miss Schrechongost?”
Good to see you too Leslie…
I think the @ doesn’t work on phones?
California and Florida. Catholic schools.
We just raised our hand like any other request and asked to use the “restroom” or “Lavatory,.” the last of which I never understood because there were no active volcanoes near either school.
Long time, no see, @zenzen!
“Can I go to the bathroom?”
“I don’t know, can you?”
SIGH “MAY I go to the bathroom?”
I’m glad I’m done with school.
I always went with “I need to take a shit/piss”
Not sure about other kids, but my ten year old daughter says she raises her hand and asks “May I please go use the girls bathroom? ”
I have 10–14 year old ask me as I run a group for them. Invariably they ask to go to the toilet. UK
@GSLeader – Does she specify which stall she’d like to use as well?
For a child to request specifically to use the bathroom by gender of the room is a bit unusual.
I believe Seek is joking.
Snarking, more accurately, but yes.
@dammitjanetfromvegas and @Seek: I was responding to @GSLeader. She said her daughter says “IMay I please go to use the girls’ bathroom?” I find that unusual, if not hard to believe.
I’m picking up what you’re putting down, @jca
In my first elementary school I think we had bathrooms in the classroom when we were very little. A single bathroom. I don’t even know if we asked to use it? Then I vaguely remember moving to another state and they expected us to go to the bathroom at certain times, and I thought that was odd.
@seek What she says is in quotes, so obviously not. She asks to use the girls bathroom, just like she’s supposed to.
50+ years ago we had to raise our hand and hold up either i finger or 2.
That supposedly meant “1 minute” or “2 minutes” but we all knew what it really meant.
I’ve heard many different terms: restroom, toilet, bathroom, etc. Many terms. Here in Hawaii, it’s also called the lua.
I’m in the US.
I used to do the peepee dance and say that I gotta go… bad.
