Can I color my hair from blonde to darker dirty blonde shade myself if I have never tried coloring it before?

I am not really experienced with hair coloring myself but would like to learn it. If anyone has tips and advice on this topic, it would be really helpful! :)

Sure. You might want to try a temporary that washes out in about 6 weeks if it’s your first time. That way if the darker shade is jarring to you it will start to fade after about 3 weeks. It will take more time if you don’t wash your hair every day. Plus, you won’t see root growth that will force you to dye again within 8 weeks. Natural Instincts are temporary if you live in America.
Edit: Here is the link to the colors available. Same website.
Only you can answer that.
I used Natural Instincts Semi-Permanent colors at home for many years. Be sure the packaging says semi-permanent because I recall a time or two when they also had a permanent version which I used accidentally – the packaging then was silver as opposed to the tan/gold of the semi-permanent. I tried other brands over the years, but got the best, most natural-looking results from the Natural Instincts brand.
The trick with the semi-permanent is to just stay a shade or two different from your own color, then the fade out / new growth isn’t so obvious. I used it because my hair had become ashy as I go older so I chose colors a shade lighter and warmer to brighten it up.
I was already starting to go grey, but I wasn’t concerned about covering those, and the semi-permanent color would tint them slightly so they looked like highlights. I got complimented on my hair often. If covering grey is a concern for you, then a permanent color may work better for you, but I agree with using semi-permanent at first until you get a feel for the technique and what colors you like.
Make sure you do the allergy test every time – especially if you have any tattoos. I don’t know why, but people with tattoos are more likely to have a reaction to hair dye, and I do know someone to whom that happened.
@JLeslie Hey thank you so much! Great point, I will try the temporary hair color first so that I have nothing to worry about even I mess up. I did not understand what you meant by “Plus, you won’t see root growth that will force you to dye again within 8 weeks” though. Could you explain that?
Also I’m going for a dirty blonde shade like this so the links you shared are very useful! It’s awesome that there is an entire chart of shades to select from! Thanks again :)
@CuriosityKills Thank you so much for your detailed response! Very useful really! I will keep those things in mind! :)
@miko If you dye your hair with permanent color, as your hair grows you will see the roots coming in a lighter color. Eventually, you will want to dye your hair again to either match your roots, or a new all over color. Unless, you’re ok with having lighter colored roots. If you do nothing it will just keep growing out that way. In 4 months you will have 2” of growth that’s lighter at the top of your head. At that point, when you pull your hair into a ponytail all the hair on your head will be lighter and the ponytail darker.
With temporary dye, as your hair grows the fake color will be fading. By the time you get to two months, which is about ¾ to an inch of growth for most people, your hair will all be close to the same color. Your natural color. You can choose to do nothing, and just be natural again, or dye your hair again.
I have been told that blondes that go very dark, sometimes there is some color left behind after months, even with the temporary dyes. But, you aren’t going very dark. I have brown hair and go darker sometimes and it always washes out well over time for me.
@JLeslie Oh wow! I never knew that! That’s very useful! Thanks for typing that out! :)
