Have you ever thought something was true, for years and years, only to find out it isn't true after all? And were you glad, or sad?

Bean wars, part II: “I fart in your general direction.”

For years I thought the texture of the beans in canned refried beans would be screwed up if I froze the cans. I assumed that held true for all cooked beans.

I eat a lot of refried beans, but my husband doesn’t, and it was frustrating because I was throwing out a half of can, or more, of beans 2 or 3 times a month.

Yesterday I learned that that is not true and I’m just so THRILLED!

I make homemade pinto beans to pour on corn bread. I simmer the beans down 2 or 3 times, with onion and bacon that has a lot of fat on it. It is so, so good. It was one of the few dishes that every kid agreed on.
I’d make a huge pot full, and we’d eat it for 3 days, in different ways, in burritos, tostados, in a lot of ways.

After the kids moved out I was a bit disheartened, and a bit challenged, about how to cook corn bread and beans for just two people. I was sad that I couldn’t make as much as I used to, and just freeze a bunch of it….

Yesterday…I FOUND OUT I CAN!!

This is a game changer for me! I mean, good-bye canned refried beans!! See ya later alligator!

That love conquers all. I was quite sad.

That’s true for pretty much every episode of QI I watch. I am usually neither glad, nor sad – more like in varying degrees of surprise/shock.

Last night I found out my father wasn’t simply a welder on a boat in the Navy during Vietnam. But he was out on the little boats that would go up the rivers and kill people. I can sort of see why this was hidden from me. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

I’ve learned…

- That getting wet doesn’t cause a cold. I mean, being cold can lead to immune system weakness making one more susceptible to succumbing to the virus, but it’s still the virus that causes the cold.

I was very happy to learn that diligent staying-away-from-humans remains the best cold prevention, regardless of any puddle-jumping whims. I still prefer a shot of whiskey in my tea afterward, just to be on the safe side.

- That knuckle-cracking doesn’t cause arthritis.

- That sitting too close to a TV doesn’t cause permanent damage to the eyes.

- That my sister had actually not graduated high school. Apparently she “didn’t know” that she hadn’t passed the FCAT standardized test. She also “didn’t know” that a Certificate of Completion was not a real diploma. Apparently my mother didn’t realise any of this, either, despite repeated telephone, email, and snail mail notification of this fact prior to her graduation date. So now, what could have been a simple matter of a retest in Summer School seven years ago is now an adult, untreated dyslexic who was trying to get into nursing school, having to go through courses to get a GED first. On her own dime.

So much stupid there I don’t know where to start.

My parents told me that the police were here to help us.

I was sad to learn the truth.
