Why don't magnets lose their magnetism?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) May 22nd, 2016

I know I can Google it, and I will, but I want to discuss something besides refried beans today. Maybe the question will go somewhere interesting.

They can if you strike them. Unless it is a permanent magnet.

What? You can temporarily magnetize something, like a nail, by rubbing a magnet on it but when you touch another metal with it, it doesn’t last long. . So I guess we’re talking about “permanent” magnets.

Heat will make or break a magnetic field.

You can wreck your computer and tv with a permanent magnet.

Nice, @Rarebear! I didn’t know that.

Can you magnetize refried beans? Are you attracted to them? Or repelled?
