Nailing down any genre is going to lead to arguments among fans and musicians alike, but basically you know it when you hear it.
Death metal is characterised by growling vocals, low-tuning, and bar chords. It’s also a matter of content – what the songs are about.
Grindcore uses drop-tuned guitars and shrieks with the growls. It’s very noisy stuff, and usually the songs are quite short.

Death metal is a little broader musically speaking. You will find complex harmony, soloing…
Grindcore is related to punk in structure but generally you will find heavily palm muted power chords droning out an almost percussive rhythm.
The two links are from the bands that are considered originators of both genre
Pining down when, specifically, a particular genre started is difficult. And pining down one of two specific bands that “originated” a particular genre doesn’t really give a full picture. Musical evolution is never that cut-and-dry. Nevertheless, there was death metal before Death. And there was grind before Napalm Death.
Absolutely, @Darth_Algar.
Roger Fisher had no idea he’d written the first-ever thrash metal riff (on Barracuda) at the time.
I always thought ‘Barracuda’ sounded a bit more Iron Maiden-esque than thrash metal. :P But then, Maiden, while not thrash themselves, were a huge influence on that genre, so again, evolution…
*BTW: If you really want to hear where Maiden got their sound there’s Genesis (back when Peter Gabriel fronted the band and Phil Collins kept his ass behind the drum kit) and Arthur Brown (you can probably tell from even that short clip how Arthur Brown has influenced, directly or indirectly, countless rock/metal acts of the proceeding decades).
..and why “considered” was used.
@Darth_Algar – I wasn’t referring to the whole song, just the chugging riff.
Not really relevant but still funny: Back in my church days there was a travelling evangelist who looked exactly like Phil Collins. It would confuse Phil Collins’ own mother. He always preached out of the book of Genesis. Far too many people didn’t understand why I found that fact so gorram funny.
@Seek “I wasn’t referring to the whole song, just the chugging riff”
Right. It’s nearly got that same kind of “galloping” feel to it that most of Maiden’s riffs have (though, obviously, it pre-dates Maiden by a few years).
