What is the rationale for max. 2 terms as US President?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) May 29th, 2016

What is the reason for this limit? If there’s a person who’s really doing good work then why shouldn’t he be allowed to contest for the 3rd time? I don’t think there is such limit in democraies like UK etc. for PM candidates. What do you think?

The limit was put in place by the Congress fearful that a popular President might ensconce him or herself in the office for as long as he pleases. More to the point, was the fear that an individual so favored by the electorate might successfully defy as well as overrule the will of the Congress ala Roosevelt

It was the consensus after Roosevelt won his fourth term. Americans have always been averse to a monarchy, and the self imposed limit of two terms was common in the early history of the Republic. Washington,Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, all served two terms and then retired.

The idea moved pretty quickly one Congress passed the amendment; it was ratified within four years.

What @zenvelo said.

If the US actually had the electoral system that it advertises, I would be against term limits. I believe term limits in that case contravenes the will of the people. If the people want the same person to be president for umpteen terms, so be it.

But our electoral system has very little to do with the will of the people and more to do with wealth and corruption by power brokers who have very little interest in serving anyone but themselves and their class—and I am for limiting that shit in every way possible.

I agree with the answers above. I wanted to add that it has been suggested that a President be able to serve a third term, but not consecutively. That they would still only be allowed 2 max in a row. Pres. Clinton has said he agrees with this idea, but he feels any President who served before the law was passed would not be eligible.

2 terms is enough.
The Presidency was not intended to be a career, but national service following a successful career in either business or the military.
The idea was that a successful, financially secure and well regarded person would lend their expertise to the Executive Branch.

Bill Gates is probably more the model the founding fathers had in mind than Donald Trump.

Regarding the third term law…law should be same to everyone. So even if someone has completed terms before passing the law can also be eligible. I don’t think any distiction can be made in the way what Bill Clinton is saying.

^^Because I think Bill Clinton felt strongly about making the change, and wanted to be excluded so no one would think he was doing just so he could be president again.
