When it's really hot, do you tend to be less productive than you typically are, or are you as active as usual?

Asked by jca (36062points) May 29th, 2016

Here in southern NY, it’s about 90 today, and was the same yesterday. Not typical for this time of year (end of May is usually lovely in the 70’s).

Do you tend to be less productive when it’s very hot or are you as active as ever?

I’m more productive. When summer comes I feel like I’m stretching my wings that have been so cramped by winter.

ragingloli's avatar

I slow down considerably.
Anything above 25, and I turn into a sloth.

Extreme heat drains me. It makes me very lethargic and short of breath if it’s humid.

jca's avatar

For me, when it’s very cold I want to lay under blankets, but when it’s very hot, I get lazy. There’s a perfect temperature for me, which is probably between 55 and 75 or 80.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I like to sweat. I’m weird.

longgone's avatar

I am much less productive. I like to lie around and drink iced peppermint tea.

I don’t like the heat at all. I actually prefer extreme cold than heat. If the temperature is 90°F-ish, I think I’d still be productive but probably more sluggish than usual. Anything more than 90°F and I end up having these constant headaches, so any chance of me being active is gone…

The more heat, the less productive I become! Ugh.

Extreme heat (and humidity) make me a bear!! I hate it with a passion.

canidmajor's avatar

I am differently productive in the heat. I may move more slowly, but with the extra hours of daylight in the summer months I get more done.

In the cold is where I’m paralyzed and less productive. If I had to work outside in 90 degrees for an extended period it would wear me out, but if it’s just hot outside and I’m mostly inside (inside my car, inside a building) and air conditioning is available, then I’m at my best. I don’t mean super-air conditioned either. I keep my air usually at 77 or 78. If I’m working I might go as low as 76.

85F is nice, if it’s a dry 85. I slow down when the humidity hits the high nineties after about 80F. A dry, mid-70s is ideal. I belong west of the Mississippi and I’ve always known it.

Yup.
The heat is another good reason to procrastinate – like I need one.
It’s not been hot where I am yet this year – still no temptation to turn the AC on.

johnpowell's avatar

When it is hot I nap even more than usual.

Seek's avatar

I’m useless in the heat.

cazzie's avatar

I haven’t seen heat like that since a 2 week visit to New Orleans 5 years ago.

tedibear's avatar

I’m much less productive in the heat. Luckily, work and home are air conditioned so I can get things done. But if I have to be outside, I’m good for about 10 minutes before the whining starts. Anything over 74F makes me useless. (The exception was our winter trip to Arizona. It hit 80 before I started to fell uncomfortable.)

JLeslie's avatar

I thought about this Q yesterday when after being outside for a couple of hours I returned home and took an hour and a half nap. LOL.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I tried to take a nap in the middle of the day on Monday. I. Just. Can’t. Do. It. Just can’t.

@Dutchess_III My husband used to say he can’t, but I taught him. First step was him finally deciding he can. Naps only work when your really tired. You need to get yourself in the same position you use for going to sleep. Make sure you’re at a comfortable temperature. Darken the room.

I don’t need to do all of that, but I don’t have a mental block about napping.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I was tired. I was utterly exhausted but I have no idea why. The room was dark, the door was shut, I curled up on my side like I usually do…but no dice. Just couldn’t. Didn’t want to, actually. I just knew I needed to.

JLeslie's avatar

Didn’t want to. Maybe that’s the problem.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh, I’m sure. I didn’t want to, but I needed to. I really, really needed to.

ibstubro's avatar

It’s finally HOT, hot here.
Bleh, spit.
I spent the day in the house, on the internet.

Silver lining? The grass is growing really slowly.

dammitjanetfromvegas's avatar

@ibstubro. Today’s heat wasn’t terrible when you are outside. Very low humidity and a nice wind. But I wasn’t working in it so others might disagree. It reminds me of Vegas heat. I’m with you on the grass. I mowed yesterday when it was still cool. It’s so dry the grass is starting to get brown spots.

jca's avatar

Here in the Northeast it’s been really nice lately. Warm and dry, high 70’s or low 80’s with a bit of a chill at night (chill being in the 50’s – good sleeping weather). For me, this is perfect. Not too hot so I can do some things and not feel like I want to lay under blankets, like I do in the winter.

ibstubro's avatar

Our humidity was really high here, @dammitjanetfromvegas.
It’s backed off some now, but my grass is still plenty healthy, and I burned trash without concern.
Temps in the 90’s.
The jet stream has moved again. St. Louis, 1½ hours south (and my NPR home), has cooler temps than I do, by several degrees.

Dutchess_III's avatar

In the 90’s on the Friday and Saturday we were at the lake. Just right for swimming. Which I didn’t do.

ibstubro's avatar

At present I putzed around until the front yard and back yard are on separate mowing schedules. About 45 minutes each. Probably better to do them both, once a week, in about an hour and ½.

Seek's avatar

Heat index hovering around 103. The air hurts my face. The humidity is at approximately a billion percent.

Why do I live where the air hurts my face and the air is too wet to breathe?

I just walked into a poached fish. Apparently it left the water and just kept swimming.

Dutchess_III's avatar

On days like today (the weather channel says it’s “96, feels like 107” and they aren’t kidding) I do stuff outside but it always involves water! Lots and lots of water, much of it on me.

You walked into a poached fish, @Seek? Is that a reference to Jonah? HA~!

cazzie's avatar

I have a free weekend with the little man at his dad’s, but the weather here is horrible. Not going out. Netflix binge is happening, with some fun on Second Life.

ragingloli's avatar

I recommend “Jessica Jones”.

cazzie's avatar

raningloli… been there, done that. Oddly, identified heavily with the main character.
