Is it best to feed an 8 week old kitten dry or wet food?

Asked by MooCows (3216points) May 29th, 2016

I was given this 8 week old kitten and know nothing
about it. I am thinking it probably needs to be wormed
and given a bath but what is the best food for her?

When I got Mittens she was around that age. The shelter we got her from was giving her dry food and we just kept on feeding her what they used.

They gave us a few bags of this stuff and we fed her that until around four months when we switched to adult food. Now she mostly eats birds and squirrels.

Oh, and at 8 weeks they are old enough to be spayed/neutered and will need a round of shots. So get your ass to a vet.

I give him/her some of both, 8 weeks is still very little. I would keep kitten chow out to free feed on and then give him/her a couple spoonfuls of canned food morning and night. Keep plenty of fresh water on hand too. Cats can free feed unlike most dogs and a growing kitten should have access to food whenever it wants it 24/7.

In the warmer weather my cats eat and drink more during the night when it is cooler. They free feed on dry food and get a half can each of wet food every afternoon. Keep her warm if you give him/her a bath and don’t let them get chilled depending on the weather in your area. Also, do not let them outside alone at such a young age and being new to your home.

Keep the kitten inside for several months unless supervised outside for short periods. Little kittens can get swooped up by hawks and owls easily or get lost.

We always fed our cats dry food.
The little ones have a tendency to diarrhea, and once you start them on canned food, they will expect it, always.

Dry food is best and helps keep the animal’s teeth clean.

Cats don’t drink a lot of water, in nature they get most of their liquid needs from eating prey. Wet food is good for cats because it gives them extra water in their system to avoid urinary issues. Very small kittens and elderly cats also have compromised chewing ability with dry food.

I always feed my kittens dry food with milk. From what I’ve learned in the last couple of years, I think the milk is not such a good idea (gives them diarrhea,) but water would have the same effect. It just seems to me that their tiny teeth would have a hard time crunching up dry food. But I could be wrong.
Eventually I went to dry food.

You can get kitten formula to give the kitten and extra boost, yeah, cows milk is not good.

I dated a dairy farmer in college. He grew up with cows and cats. When he was a kid he thought that that was all that cats ate was cows milk. Come milking time the cats would line up so the milker could squirt a bit of milk in their directions.

8 weeks kitten is not fully weaned yet. At this stage the kitten will start to eat solid food and semi-solid food can be gradually given in small portion. It really doesn’t matter if you only have dry food as it can be crushed and mixed with a bit of warm water or lactose-free milk to create the perfect soft texture for kitten. Otherwise, kitten formula milk is a better solution for this particular stage.

Doesn’t kitten chow come dusted with some sort of powdered milk and you’re supposed to mix it with water?
